The pandemic has put a halt to traveling but just because you can’t catch a flight or drive to the beach or somewhere tropical doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with the kids. Now is the time to put your thinking cap on and get your creative juices flowing. But if you’re still in need of ideas look no further, here are seven fun staycation ideas you can do with the kids that are guaranteed to make the most of the summer and create great memories.
But before we begin, just as you would shop for vacation, shop for the staycation. That includes swimwear, food, and everything in-between. You are looking to have just as much or more fun with this trip as you would going away so have that mindset as you shop. Think of the pictures you’ll take, the memories you’ll make, and the smiles you intend to see on your little one’s face. Shopping will make it all worthwhile.
Book a Hotel
Hotels aren’t just for vacations. You can book a hotel in the city, five minutes away from you, or wherever you want. Staycations are about having fun and saving money so research and pick what makes sense for you. Just make sure the hotel is of quality and has a nice pool for the kids and a hot tub for the adults. A tradition my family and I have created is buying an array of glow sticks, necklaces, and bracelets at the local dollar store and having a glow party at night. We turn out all the lights and dance nonstop, it’s the best thing ever! Talk about creating great memories!
Bring the Camping to You
Who says you need an outdoor forest to go camping? All you really need is a backyard, a decent-sized tent, and an imagination. Kids come equipped with imagination so all that’s left is a make-shift fire pit or grill, hot dogs, smores, and storytime. This staycation idea is very easy on the pockets and simple. Kids care more about the experience than the expense anyway, so focus on creating an atmosphere that makes it all come together.
Host a Paint & Sip
The kids will love this at-home event and so will you. You can find everything you need at your local dollar store. They’ll have the canvases (6×8) but it’s for the kids so that’s ok, acrylic paint, paintbrushes, and wine glasses. They even have sparkling juice for the kids. Talk about one-stop shopping. You can create the same ambiance as the event spaces do and provide music, a theme of your choice or free paint, and let the kids have at it. The best thing about art is that it allows you to express yourself freely; who knows, this paint party might inspire someone to continue an art path in life.
Have a Staycation Cookoff
This is gonna be a hit with the kids! A big part of vacations is food; finding out what to eat and which restaurant is best can sometimes be time-consuming. On this staycation add some flare and give yourself a break by having the kids cook for you. One thing kids love to do is get their hands dirty and for some reason, cooking excites them. Maybe it’s the independence of it all, or simply learning how to do something. Brainstorm a dish and supervise (of course) as they each make their own version of it. It can be as simple as mac and cheese, or chicken and broccoli alfredo. This activity is a win-win for both parties, that is if the food turns out to be delicious.
Have the Ultimate Staycation Movie Night
The movie theatre can be such an experience. As soon as you enter, the smell of hot fresh popcorn smacks you in the face, why not recreate that at home? Get an assortment of chocolate and fruit candies, juice, and/or slushies. Purchase the popping pan popcorn and let the kids keep an eye on it; get the softest throws/blankets you have, and decide on movies to make the staycation a complete hit. Then all you need to do is set the ambiance with the lighting. Turn the lights off and illuminate the room with lights (Christmas lights work just fine) along the floor or side walls to give it that theatre feel. If you have all of these elements you’re guaranteed to have a great night snuggled up on the couch, or recliners with your little ones.
Now that you have a few ideas for a great staycation you can try these out and expand further. Don’t let COVID-19 stop your fun and especially not your baby’s summer. There’s plenty to do safely, so don’t forget your masks and hand sanitizer. In every staycation idea please remember to wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, and also social distance.
