On top of having some of the most amazing food, New York is also known for something else: the museums. If you’re interested in strolling through museums, then NY is the spot! One of the most popular spots to consider checking out is the NY Museum Of Modern Art!

How To See Masterpieces While In NYC

From The Whitney Museum of Art to the Guggenheim, NY has some of the best art in the world on display! It’s one of the reasons why the city is such a popular tourist attraction!

When in NY, you have the opportunity to view some of the most famous works of art! For example, The Water Lily Pond by Claude Monet is available for your viewing pleasure at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! You can also see the Mountains at Saint Rémy by Van Gogh at the Guggenheim.

However, when it comes down to it, the NY Museum of Modern Art has such a wide variety of different artists and mediums when compared to other art museums in the city.

Take A Virtual Tour Of The NY Museum of Modern Art

As we all know, the world is on pause at the moment. Due to COVID-19 many public attractions and events have been canceled until further notice. As much as we’d all like to be out and about, it’s important to stay home if you an to prevent further spreading.

However, just because you can’t go to the NY Museum of Modern Art doesn’t mean that it can’t come to you! Although the museum is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, they couldn’t let that couldn’t stop them!

After all, art is such an important part of education as well as keeping your mind open to creativity! And with everything going on in the world, we could all use some creativity and good visual aesthetics to stimulate our minds a little bit!

Making Use of Social Media

If there’s one thing that the NY Museum of Modern Art knows how to do, it’s social media. One of the coolest things about it is their use of the IGTV feature, which they use to showcase certain exhibits and pieces that otherwise would’ve been on display in the museum.

With that being said, now more than ever, social media has been a crucial part of keeping organizations and businesses alive. After all, everything is online now. And the MoMA has used that to their absolute advantage!

If you’ve never been to the museum before, they often host events with a particular artist or certain speakers. However, it can now be done virtually by going through their social media! Check out their Instagram! They post almost every day and often hold online Q&A’s and other virtual museum events!

We spoke with artist and scholar Hanaa Malallah about how she dealt with the devastating impacts of war and sanctions in Iraq, and the responsibility she feels as an artist to memorialize loss of life. Her work "She/He Has No Picture” was included in our fall exhibition "Theater of Operations: The Gulf Wars 1991-2011." It depicts the victims of the 1991 Amiriyah bombing in Baghdad, when US forces killed over 400 civilians who were gathered at an air-raid shelter. Each individual face is represented using layers of burnt canvas, and for those with no known image she writes, "She/He Has No Picture" in place of a portrait. "This resembles the way the victims were incinerated by fire. So all of my life and education intertwine with the violence, a brutal regime, wars, sanctions." #SubjectMatters artist interviews explore contemporary social, economic, and political issues through the lens of artwork—the featured artists are committed to bringing greater awareness to urgent matters.

Live From Their Website

Another great thing about the museum is their sense of self awareness. They know exactly what we’re living through and aren’t afraid to address it and showcase it to online visitors of the museum!

As a result of this characteristic, the museum has uploaded a virtual tour of some of the exhibits that the museum has curated specifically for this situation we are living in. Entitled Video Lives, this virtual tour takes you on a journey about the response of the camera being introduced in an intimate setting!

Check out the video below for an introduction on just what this video entails!

Hosting Online Events and Workshops

Another huge part of the NY Museum of Modern Art experience were the events and workshops that they were able to offer to the general public! They hosted events ranging from a one-woman show by Yoko Ono to the MoMA Film Benefit with celebrity appearances from Adam Driver and Laura Dern!

It’s no secret that for the time being, these types of events have been postponed. However, the museum has decided to turn lemons into lemonade with this information and run with it! How you may ask? By offering these same type of opportunity workshops and events virtually!

This month, they have a few different events to choose from:

  • Drop-In With Artists – With Nairy Baghramian on Wednesday, July 15 at 12:00 P.M
  • Online Family Art Workshops: Design a Chair on Thursday, July 16 at 2:00 P.M
  • Virtual Views: Gordon Parks, a Live Q&A on Thursday, July 16 at 8:00 P.M
  • Evening In Workshop (for members) on Wednesday, August 12 at 7:30 P.M

These classes, workshops and events are a great way to not only observe the art, but have a chance to really interact and experience it! It’s also a great way to meet and discuss with new people virtually, now more than ever!

Making The Most of Your Virtual Experience

The museum has and always will provide the public with a wide variety of artistic content! And now it’s available for you with the touch of the button!

Want to get some outside stimulation but can’t leave home? Then the MoMA virtual experiences are perfect for you!
