Callan McAuliffe is a 25-year-old actor that is best known for his role in the hit horror show, The Walking Dead. The young actor plays the character, Alden, who is trying to stay alive in a post-apocalyptic world, but he is every bit as interesting in real life too.
Callan has also had roles in the movies Flipped and I Am Number Four. He has also been dubbed as the “next Liam Hemsworth” which could be down to either his good looks, nationality, or acting talent. Maybe it’s all three!
1. Callan McAuliffe is Australian
Despite the fact that Callan McAuliffe has spoken in a convincing American accent for many of his roles, he is actually Australian. Callan was born in Sydney and moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
In an interview with Film Courage, Callan highlighted the importance of mastering an American accent. Even before moving to the US, Callan maintained that actors should already have it dialed in: “I feel like almost before you should even arrange any papers or before you should even book a flight or just consider…before it should be a twinkle in your eye (the idea of living here or moving here) you should have an American accent down I feel like.”
Even when Callan is not acting, he has left people perplexed over his unusual accent. Many people have mistaken him for anything from British to South African. Callan puts this down to his frequent traveling but says he sounds more Australian when speaking to his mother.
2. Callan Played Young Gatsby
Before Callan McAuliffe was a star in The Walking Dead, he played young Gatsby in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby. With it being released 7 years ago, Callan is almost unrecognizable in the latest film adaptation of the classic novel.
The role meant that Callan was playing a younger Leonardo Dicaprio, and what’s more complimentary than that? Like Dicaprio, Callan has been credited with boyish good looks and also shares his talent for acting.
3. Callan McAuliffe Helps to Rescue Wolves
When Callan isn’t busy acting, he is passionate about working to rescue wolves. According to Wikipedia, Callan is the Youth Ambassador of Wolf Connection. Wolf Connection is a non-profit organization, which focuses on rescuing wolves and wolf-dogs. The non-profit is based in California and includes a youth education and empowerment program.
A keen activist, Callan is also proud to be a National Ambassador for UNICEF Australia in 2013. Callan was quoted saying: “It is an honor to be invited to be a National Ambassador to UNICEF Australia and so important that is at a time where I can really contribute. My friends, the actors I work with, and I, all have shelter, food, and family. We need to help children who are without these things.”
4. Callan has a Famous Cousin
Acting clearly runs in the family, as Callan McAuliffe’s cousin is Jacinta John. Jacinta is an Australian actress, producer, and director. She is best known for her role as Miss Casewellin the 60th-anniversary tour of Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap.
5. An Injury Led to a Stronger Focus on Performing Arts
Callan’s first role was when he was just eight years old in the Australian television series Comedy Inc. and Blue Water High. However, as well as a passion for performing arts, Callan was also a strong track athlete.
Unfortunately, Callan got injured while playing sports at his all-boys college. This led him to become even more focused on a career in acting.
6. Callan’s Great-Great-Great-Grandfather Was a Pretty Big Deal
Callan McAuliffe’s great-great-great-grandfather, Joseph Augustus Henriques, was appointed by the United States President as the first USA Consul to Australia in 1852. Joseph Augustus Henriques resided in New York on 5th Avenue before moving to Melbourne to represent the US in Australia.
7. Callan is Single
Perhaps the most surprising fact of all is that Callan McAuliffe is currently single. Callan is a handsome activist and animal lover, a talented actor, and the bonus is that he has an Australian accent. He definitely won’t stay single for long.
