When you are part of Hollywood royalty, it can be easy to develop a sense of entitlement. Well, that is not the path Jason Schwartzman chose. The nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, Schwartzman forged his own path and found success in music and film.
Just Who is Jason Schwartzman
The son of Academy Award-nominated actress Talia Shire, Jason, whose full name is Jason Francesco Schwartzman, was born on June 26, 1980, in Los Angeles, California. His father, Jack Schwartzman, worked behind the camera as an American film producer.
Following in his parent’s footsteps, Jason has proven to be a talented actor and producer. Not content to simply follow his parents’ path, he also found success on the indie music scene.
A Pedigree of Hollywood Success
Jason is not just the son of two Hollywood success stories. He is part of one of the most well-known and influential families in Hollywood history. Jason is part of the Coppola family, which boasts three generations of Academy Award nominees and winners.
He is the grandson of Academy Award-winning composer Carmine Coppola and the Coppola matriarch Italia Coppola. Jason’s uncle is the multi-award-winning producer and director Francis Ford Coppola. And his brother, Robert Coppola Schwartzman, is also an accomplished actor, director, screenwriter, and musician in his own right.
Jason’s list of cousins includes some of Hollywood’s brightest and most talented actors, directors, screenwriters, and producers. Christopher Coppola is an actor, producer, and father to Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage. Two of Jason’s cousins, Roman and Sofia Coppola, won or were nominated for multiple awards in Hollywood and across the globe. Jason was actually under the direction of his cousin, Sofia Coppola, as he played King Louis XVI in 2006’s Marie Antoinette.
His Many Acting Roles
Jason got his start acting at the age of 17 in the 1998 Wes Anderson movie Rushmore. He would go on to collaborate with Anderson on several other films; The Darjeeling Limited, Isle of Dogs, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Grand Budapest Hotel, and the Moonrise Kingdom.
With over 70 acting credits spread between both movies and television roles, Jason has proven to be a prolific actor. He will often use a mix of dry humor and melancholy to bring his roles to life on screen. Among his newest project are 2020’s season of the television series Fargo and the big screen movies Mainstream and The French Dispatch.
Staying busy, Jason is credited with soundtrack work on over 20 film and television projects. One of his better-known musical works was the theme song for the television show The O.C. He has also done work as the writer, producer, or director on nearly ten separate projects.
He Was a Rocker
Before beginning his acting career in 1998, Jason, who was 14 at the time, was part of the indie rock group Phantom Planet. The band was formed in 1994 in Los Angeles, California. Alex Greenwald provided vocals and rhythm guitar, lead guitarists included Darren Robinson and Jacques Brautbar, Sam Farrar was on bass guitar, and Jason played drums till his 2003 departure from the band to pursue acting.
The band landed a record deal in 1997 with Geffen Records and would release their first album, Phantom Planet is Missing, in 1998. Band members would go on to branch out from music with members appearing in Get Real and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch television series. Jason’s big film break would come with 1998’s Rushmore movie.
With music still in his blood, Jason would step out solo with Coconut Records. His first solo album was 2007’s Nighttiming. Jason would go on to release Davy, his second solo album, two years later.
His Family
On July 11, 2009, Jason was married in California’s San Fernando Valley to his design and art director girlfriend Brandy Cunningham. The couple has two daughters, Marlowe River, who was born in December of 2011, and Una, who was born in October 2014. The couple has tried to shield their two children from the prying eyes of the public.
Fairly active on social media, Jason can be found on a few different platforms. His Instagram account has about 250 followers. On Twitter, he has around 2,000 followers and over 13-thousand followers on Facebook.
Through three generations, the Coppola family name has carried weight and influence throughout Hollywood. That kind of pressure can become overwhelming for some people, but it was not the case for Jason Schwartzman. Since the age of 14, Jason has made his mark in music, film, and television.
Accomplished both in front of and behind the camera, Jason has stood out as a generational talent. A talent that did not just rest on the legacy of his famous family, but a talent that earned his place among one of Hollywood’s power families.
