Shameless is a top-rated Showtime show that first aired in January of 2011. The American version of the show is based on the popular British version of the same title. This show takes place in Chicago and follows the lives of the Gallagher family. Shameless is a comedy-drama show that deals with serious subjects such as addiction. When you watch Shameless you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll have some very mixed feelings about the Gallagher family. Carl is the second youngest of all of the Gallagher siblings. Carl Gallagher is played by the incredible Ethan Cutkosky.

Here is everything you need to know about the character Carl Gallagher.

Carl Gallagher’s Family

As mentioned before, Carl is one of the youngest Gallagher siblings. He has four full siblings and two half-siblings. Despite being one of the youngest, he is fairly protective of his siblings. In season 1 he defends his brother Lip from a bully with a baseball bat. His oldest sister, Fiona, plays a maternal role in his life. Carl’s relationship with his father Frank is a little different than that of his siblings’. His older siblings understand the weight of everything Frank has done to them throughout the years, but Carl still adores him. He is one of the only children to still call their father dad instead of Frank. In season 5 Carl takes advantage of his younger nephew’s naivety and convinces him to deliver drugs.

Carl’s School Life

When he was younger Carl Gallagher got into a lot of trouble at school. He was seen as a delinquent with lots of behavioral issues. Carl often faced the possibility of being expelled from school. He does not like school much, he even insists that he would learn more from going to juvie than he would at school.

Later in the series, Carl decides to attend military school. He made this decision after experiencing a traumatic murder and deciding he wanted to better himself. Even though he quit a few times, he kept going back to school and really worked on himself. Carl Gallagher was very passionate about military school. He applies to West Point but does not get in.

Carl’s Relationships

Throughout the entire TV series, Carl has very rocky romantic relationships. In season 4, Carl Gallagher meets a girl named Bonnie (played by Morgan Lily) in detention. The two of them begin a partner-in-crime type of relationship. Carl and Bonnie kiss and admit they like each other. Carl invites Bonnie and her siblings to live with him. Later on in the season, Bonnie and her siblings go missing.

Carl’s next love interest, Dominique, is introduced in season 6. He gives her a bike, and she appreciates the gift. However, she doesn’t show much interest back until Carl stops acting like a thug. They get together and have a very strained sex life until he finds out she is cheating on him.

Carl then dated Kassidi throughout seasons 8 and 9. Pretty soon after their relationship began, Carl realized that Kassidi was obsessed with him. She was incredibly manipulative and abusive towards him for the entirety of their relationship. She then convinced him to marry her. Eventually, Carl went back to military school and Kassidi followed him. She set up camp next to the campus. It is implied that she was killed by one of Carl’s cadets.

Kelly and Carl had a very strange relationship in season 9. Her father was an Army officer. They were fairly stable for a while until Carl thought Kelly might be attracted to his sister. She broke up with him because of this. They get back together shortly after this. In season 10 they break up after Carl finds out that Kelly is cheating on him. After they break up, Carl Gallagher has a brief romance with Anne. They share a kiss before she moves away. This is the least dramatic relationship Carl has throughout the series.

Jobs That Carl Gallagher Had

Throughout a large portion of the show, Carl makes money from criminal activity. He often participates in schemes to scam people out of their money. He sells drugs for a local gang which ends up giving him some time in juvie. Carl also sells firearms for a short period of time.

Carl also had a few non-criminal jobs. He works at a diner called Patsy’s Pies. He also works at a shrimp shack called Captain Bob’s. Towards the end of the intense show, Carl Gallagher even becomes a police officer. This job is perfect for him as he has shown throughout the series that he cares for others and wants to improve his community. However, he faces a few challenges in this role. He arrests a richer man and when he does not apologize for doing this he gets demoted. With his new role of being a meter maid, he tickets rich people and gives poor people a break.
