Many actors and actresses don’t always start out acting as a career path. When you research your favorite actors, sometimes you will find that they did completely opposite jobs from acting beforehand. Actors such as Zoe Saldana, Madeleine Petsch, Hugh Jackman, Megan Fox, and more had regular jobs or different types of jobs before becoming actors. One actress specifically is Amy Acker, who spent many years studying ballet before landing as an actress.

Who Is Amy Acker?
Actress Amy Acker is known for playing roles such as Winifred Burkle in Angel which ran from 2001-2004. Aside from this role she was also in the show Person of Interest which ran from 2012-2016. Acker was raised in Dallas, Texas, and is currently married to an actor as well. Her husband James Carpinello also has some famous roles and TV shows that he acts in! The couple has been married since 2003 and they share two children together.
Her husband Carpinello is best known for appearing in Tori Spellings’s show So Notorious on VH1. Unfortunately, the show only has one season. Another famous role he has was when he appeared in the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.
Amy Acker has also acted in many TV shows as a guest appearance. A list of these shows you might have seen her in are, Suits, Agents of Shield, How I Met Your Mother, The Good Wife, Grimm, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural and more. Aside from her TV appearances, she did gain acknowledgment for her acting in Angel. Winning a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series and received nominations from the Cinescape and Golden Satellite Awards.
Amy Acker’s Ballet Career
Before pursuing acting Acker studied Ballet and modern dance for 14 years. The young actress had hopes of pursuing this as a career path but unfortunately, life did not go as planned. While the young dancer was in High School she had to undergo knee surgery, and because of the surgery, she had to quit her ballet career and switch her future plans. Acker while attending Lake Highlands High School fell in love with acting, this same high school has also had talented famous actors as alumni.
Lake Highlands High School has had actors such as Morgan Fairchild, Scoot Mcnairy, and Glee star Mark Sailing who passed away a couple of years ago. While attending school there she worked with Nancy Poynter who helped start her acting career. “We did really interesting and challenging plays, and Nancy Poynter basically prepares us for everything that I ended up Learning at SMU.” She tells The Dallas Observer, ” Pretty much everything I learned was back in Texas.”
From Ballet to Theater
Despite her ballet career not working out, she moves on to acting after high school. While attending Southern Methodist University she performs at the time in the Undermain Theater and Stage West in Fort Worth. Working on many plays she gets recognition as she gains a Leon Rabin award for her role in Therese Raqui. “I was really shy growing up so I never really thought this would be something that I would enjoy so much, but I had such a fantastic theater teacher in high school.”
Acker does not regret switching from Ballet to Theater and acting. She recalls that the acting role that’s the highlight of her career is her time on Person of Interest.
Within Person of Interest, she plays Root who is a super-smart, and bad-ass computer hacker. “My character has just been so much fun and it’s brought in a whole different fan base,” She says. “It’s been really neat to see all the different kinds of fans of different shows and how they overlap, and which projects are more important to other people and how different roles have affected different people.
Where is Amy Acker Now?
One can agree that Amy Acker has had a nice acting career, and has done some memorable roles. She also attended the Fan Expo in Dallas a couple of years ago where fans dressed up as characters she played on TV. Even though the shows she works in haven’t lasted many seasons, she clearly still has a good amount of fans!
At the moment Acker has 217 thousand followers on Instagram and shoots small films. there are currently only three of the short films and the new one Outside is to drop soon. One of the most recent roles she worked in was Caitlin Strucker on the superhero drama series The Gifted, based on Marvel’s X-Men.
