Most of you probably know Cobie Smulders from her lead role as Maria Hill in the Marvel hit Avengers. Others may better know her for her role in the American Sitcom How I met your Mother. Her husband, Taran Killam, is best known for his work on Mad TV and Saturday Night Live. Others simply know them as one of America’s favorite couples.
However you know them, there is much to be learned about their relationship. Here are 9 things we can learn from the relationship of Taran and Cobie:
1. Jazz really is the language of love
Sure, we’ve all thought of jazz as the “romantic” genre, but the relationship between Cobie and Taran proves it to be true. Killam, 36, told US Weekly that the two met at Fat Cat in New York City. There, they “played pool, and then listened to jazz, and fell in love.” We’re not sure that jazz will magically make someone fall in love with you, but hey, it worked for them!
2. Humbleness is sexy
Fame, fortune, good looks – this couple has it all, so it wouldn’t be difficult for them to lose themselves in their own egos. But from this couple, we learn that humbleness is what’s really sexy. In an interview with US Weekly, Taran Killam told of the moment he knew he was in love – when she turned around to buy lemonade from a little girl at a lemonade stand. And as Killam said, “I was done.”
3. It’s important to keep the romance alive
As you can imagine, keeping the romance alive when you’re both Hollywood movie stars isn’t always easy. When they’re both traveling around on different sets, there’s not much time for romance. But that doesn’t stop Cobie from trying to keep it alive. On one Late Night With Seth Myers episode, Cobie revealed that she sends Marvel movie spoilers to her husband to keep the passion alive when they aren’t together!
4. Family is Number One
On the couple’s seven-year wedding anniversary, Smulders and Killam decided to forgo any plans to celebrate, in favor of celebrating the 90th birthday of Killam’s grandmother instead. Her birthday just happened to fall on the same day of their anniversary, and they deemed that “turning 90 was much more important than 7 years of marriage.”
5. It’s important to have a support system
Smulders and Killam share two daughters together, 10-year-old Shaelyn and 4-year-old Joelle. But they attribute their ability to juggle parenthood and their work to an “amazing support system.” In a 2017 interview with SheKnows, Killam Smulders stated that “we have family that helps us out when we need it and just supports our girls emotionally well.” She goes on to state that the couple always puts their girls as a priority in each and every decision they make.
6. Taran Killam stands by his woman
In 2015, Smulders made it publicly known that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 25. As a young woman, she had two tumors removed via surgery and then required three additional surgeries after the cancer spread to her lymph nodes. And through every step of the way, her amazing and supportive husband was there by her side. Good news – 2019 reports say that Smulders is in remission!
7. Some things are best left to the imagination
Shortly after announcing their engagement in 2009, Smulders decided to keep the details of her proposal secret. When asked how Killam popped the question, Smulders stated, “That’s personal, but it was very romantic, I’ll tell you that much”. And in a world where we share our entire lives on social media, the importance of keeping some things private can be a great lesson to learn.
8. Voting is important
Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam make no secret that the two of them voted together during the 2020 election. After just recently becoming a US citizen, Smulders was seen rocking an “I voted” shirt while walking hand in hand with her hubby to drop off their mail-in ballots in Los Angeles. Taran later posted a photo on Instagram stating that “this was the first time we’ve ever voted together” – the first of many, we’re sure.
9. True love really does exist
If there’s anything that we can learn from the relationship of Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam, it’s that true love really does exist. The two met when they were just 22 years old, and through all of the normal trials and tribunes of marriage, Cobie still declares herself as a “very lucky woman.”
Not everyone is a Marvel fan or a sitcom fan or a Saturday Night Live fan, but if there’s one thing that we can all agree on, it’s that Cobie Smulders and Taran Killam have a relationship we can all aspire to. Whether it be keeping the passion alive, putting family first, or standing by one another, true love isn’t just for the movie screen!
