Finding a roommate is hard.

But NYC is the city of dreams. And there are a lot of people out there trying to reach theirs. So you’re bound to run into someone who needs a cheap apartment much like yourself.

But not all roommates are created equal. And finding a person to live with isn’t the same as finding someone to split rent with you.

Luckily, there’s hope.

We’re living in a digital age, after all. And we can do everything on our phones now. That includes finding your perfect roommate match.

Whether you’re looking to get out of an old apartment with roommates that no longer click or you’re new to the city, these apps can help you find your new roommate.

RoomZoom

RoomZoom is one of the more well-known roommate-finding apps out there. It was created in order to make the roommate search safer and simpler. And it does a great job at both.

RoomZoom works exclusively in New York, so if you live elsewhere it might not be the most helpful. But it is a free platform, so there’s a plus.

Make sure you make it very clear who you are and what you’re looking for. This will ensure that you’ll find the best roommate possible while using the app.

Roomster

Roomster is a great app for those social media addicts out there. It congregates all of your social media accounts to help you make a profile. This makes the process of finding your roommate even easier. And it lets you get your social media stalk on.

Making an account is free. So you can set up a profile and upload a listing. You can even get messages from those that pay to subscribe.

But if you want full access, you will need to sign on to a paid subscription which will let you send messages on the native social media sites.

Roomi

“Room right, live right.”

That’s the Roomi slogan. And it fits the company perfectly.

This app is dedicated to helping you find solid, reliable roommates. And to make the process easier, it screens all apartment and roommate listings before they are ever allowed to go live. You don’t have to worry about getting scammed or faked out here.

And that’s a huge relief considering all of the other scams the city has to offer.

The Roomi app is free to use. Create a profile, post a listing and chat with other users with ease.

Users can upgrade to a paid subscription to essentially “promote” their listings to the top of the list.

Facebook

Obviously, Facebook isn’t an app created solely for the purpose of finding roommates. But it’s a great, free platform that you can use to find a new roommate. There are dozens of groups in cities across the world where people are looking for roommates.

Sign on to an old lease, sublet your own apartment and find individuals like yourself that are looking for a fresh start and a fresh face to share an apartment with.

In New York City alone, there are dozens of groups dedicated to this endeavor. So it won’t take you long to find a person you can connect with a trust to sign on the lease’s dotted line.

SpareRoom

SpareRoom is a great app for city-livers who want to find a roommate that shares their interest. The app lets you customize your search so that you only connect with the people that connect with you. And that’s important in a city where you don’t know anyone else.

The app is easy to use and free to set up. And the best part about the brand? It hosts weekly meeting across NYC for you to meet potential roommates face-to-face. Talk about innovation!

Don’t let the roommate-finding process tear you down. These five apps are the perfect resource to help you find the perfect match!
