It’s always important to remember that an important aspect of any baking is enjoying the food wherever you are visiting. this general rule especially when you’re visiting New York City. I’m sure some of you have even created your own NYC food bucket list!
New York is known for its famous food. I’m sure you all had New York or a yummy bagel with cream cheese. However, for those of you who are new to the city or are currently planning your trip, then you’re missing out!
Because NYC is so known for its food, there are so many different NYC food bucket list that you can follow! However, not to toot my own horn or anything, I think I have come up with one of the best lists to follow!
Being a native New Yorker and having lived there pretty much my entire life, I know my stuff – especially when it comes to food! The list that I have created for you includes so many different styles of food that New York is known and loved for! Whether you’re heading to Katz’s Delicatessen or you’re in the mood for some baked, we’ve got you covered!
1) Pizza
I don’t know about you guys, but I know that one of the first things that I think of when thinking “New York foods” is pizza! Pizza is a universal fan favorite, whether you prefer a classic plain pie or Hawaiian style, complete with pineapple (controversial topic – I know)!
It’s no secret that New York is known worldwide to be the best in the pizza game. Something about New York pizza hits different! I recommend that you add Artichoke Pizza or Joe’s Pizza to your NYC food bucket list!
2) Crazy Shakes from Black Tap
If you’re unfamiliar with the NYC restaurant Black Tap, then you’re missing out on a huge treat. Literally! Black Tap is a restaurant with only 5 locations nationwide with three of them being in NYC!
They specialize in burgers, fries, and of course, their famous shakes! Whether you’re a fan of chocolate or you love all things sour, Black Tap has you covered. With a menu of what they call “Crazy Shakes” including flavors such as “Cotton Candy,” “The Cake Shake,” and “The Cookie Shake!” Thank us later – oh, and maybe wear some loose pants!
3) Katz’s Delicatessen
Katz’s has got to be on almost any NYC food bucket list! It’s almost a crime if you don’t try to stop by Kat’s at some point if you’re visiting NYC! Katz’s Delicatessen is a kosher-style deli located in the Lower East Side and has been around since it was founded in 1888!
Known for its pastrami on rye, complete your kosher-style meal with Dr. Brown’s soda to drink and a potato salad, knish, or hot dog on the side. My personal favorite is their thick, potato style french fries! You’re a true New Yorker now!
4) Bagels
Another one of the most iconic foods that NYC is known for is its bagels of course! Boiled and/or baked to perfection, something about NYC bagels is just done the right way when compared to anywhere else! Some of my go-to bagel places here are Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Co. and Murray’s Bagels!
If you’ve never had a real NYC bagel before, I recommend starting off with a classic staple: cream cheese! However, if you want to step up your game a little bit, try pairing a bagel of your choice with a fish such as lox or whitefish! It is a real game-changer!
5) Magnolia Bakery
If you’re like me and you have a crazy sweet tooth, then Magnolia Bakery may be the NYC food bucket list restaurant for you! The original Magnolia bakery was started around 24 years ago, in 1996. Started by owners Jennifer Appel and Allysa Torey, they started making recipes for cupcakes using their leftover cake batter! Eventually, their recipes became super popular amongst the customers and their bakery bloomed!
Although I would recommend trying out their delicious cupcakes while stopping in for a visit, there are a few other menu items worth tasting! Magnolia Bakery is also known for its Banana Pudding, which includes small chunks of delicious cake or one of their delicious Ice Box Pies! Everything at Magnolia truly tastes as good as it sounds!
6) Street Vendors
As generic and as simple as it sounds, you really cannot call your NYC food bucket list complete without hitting up a couple of street vendors! New York is notorious for its carts, setting up shop on every other street corner, offering passerby’s a plethora of different cuisines to pick up on their daily commute!
Whether you’re in the mood for a famous NYC dirty water hot dog, or you want a salty hot pretzel, you can find it all, and for a great price too! Another one of my favorite New York staple its Nutz 4 Nutz, which serves delicious roasted and seasoned nuts. I’m sure you’ve smelled them before while walking around New York City!
There are so many different options when it comes to curating the perfect NYC food bucket list that it’s hard to narrow everything down to a list! Although there are literally hundreds of restaurants famous in New York, I think I’ve given you the basics! Enjoy and let us know if you decide to check out any of these places while in NYC!
