There are seemingly endless list of things to do in New York City. You can see a show on Broadway, take a walk through Central Park, visit one of the countless museums. But there are some events that only happen once a year. So if you want to experience them you need to come at the right time. Or if you already live here, you need to know when they are happening. Though a lot of annual events take place on weekdays, there are many New York City weekend events. It would be impossible to list all the things you could do on weekends in The City. But we have chosen some of the best annual events for you to explore.

Jewish Film Festival

Every year the Jewish museum and the Lincoln Center come together to host this amazing cultural event. They show movies from around the world that focus on the Jewish experience. But you don’t have to be Jewish to love these movies or appreciate their artistry.

Lunar New Year Parade

Who doesn’t love dragon dance and red envelopes filled with money? This parade is a great way to celebrate Chinese culture and support businesses in Chinatown.

The Winter Show

If you love antiquing, but are too poor to buy anything this event is perfect. The Winter Show displays some of the most valuable antiques worldwide. Plus revenue from the event goes to charity.

Fashion Week

You’ve probably already seen highlights from fashion week in magazines and in the news. But if you are here you can actually try and attend. Maybe you will even get a glimpse at some celebrities.

Broadway Week

Broadway Week happens twice a year, and is a must for theater goers. Broadway shows offer discounts, such as 2-for-1 tickets. You can go see some of your favorite shows at the lowest prices.

Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival

Unlike other parades, this one is not organized with floats. People from around the world simply come in their best bonnets and parade themselves around the streets. It is a wholesome treat whether you celebrate Easter or not.

Five Borough Bike Tour

Thousands come together for this annual New York City weekend event. If you haven’t had the chance to explore all of the boroughs, this event is a great way to finally do it. You can see new parts of the city while getting some exercise.

Ninth Avenue International Food Festival

Get amazing food from cultures all around the world. This festival is a great way to try new foods, or get some of the international dishes you already love.

Puerto Rican Day Parade

Come celebrate Puerto Rican culture with this amazing parade. It is one of the largest parades in the United States, and one of the best ways to celebrate diversity in New York.

Pride

Although June is Pride month, and the end of June is Pride week, there is also Pride weekend. It happens at the end of June to commemorate the Stonewall riots of 1969. The Pride Parade is the most famous event, but there are also tons of parties and ways to celebrate the queer community.

Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest

Americans love nothing more than the Fourth and watching people competitively eat. This event is the perfect combination of both. Grab a hot dog and watch the event, or join in if you are really up for it.

Cherry Blossom Festival

The Cherry Blossom Festival is a great way to celebrate Japanese culture while looking at beautiful plants. Cherry blossoms only bloom for a short period of time, so make sure you stop by.

NYCxDESIGN

Check out some of the most innovative designs while learning something new. You can attend talks, look at galleries, attends trade shows and so much more. It is a must see for anyone you loves design.

Mermaid Parade

Do you want to dress up like a mermaid and look at art? Then this event is perfect for you. Check out tons of artists at Coney Island, while sporting your best clam shell bra.

San Gennaro Festival

If you love Italian food, this one is for you. Little Italy blocks off several blocks so you can walk down the street eating cannolis and listening to live music. You and your tastebuds are sure to have an amazing time.

Archtober

Archtober happens throughout the whole month of October, so there is no excuse not to go. Architects all over the city teach about architecture and design. This event is a great way to learn something new.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

You’ve probably seen this one of TV, or at least heard about it. But if you are in New York City, you have to go. Although it is freezing and the streets are packed, that is part of the fun. There is nothing like watching the balloons float past on Thanksgiving morning.

New York City Marathon

Whether you are joining in or just watching, this is one of the bigger annual New York City weekend events. It is also one of the few events that focus on exercise. Whether you have been training for months, or gave up training on day two, this is a great event to watch or participate in.

Ball Drop in Time Square

This is one of the most widely known annual events in the city. You could be one of the many people standing in the crowd at Time Square, instead of watching from home. You’ll have to get there early, but this is a magical experience.
