If the idea of pulling on a suit and tie or a smart skirt and pair of heels fills you with dread, the good news is that many jobs no longer have a formal dress code. An increasing number of offices are happy for employees to wear casual clothing, adopting the attitude that workers who feel physically comfortable will be more productive. However, there are still some jobs where it is vital to look smart while being fashion-forward. If you work in one of these professions, you’ll need to adapt to wearing formal clothes quickly or look for an alternative role. What are these jobs? Keep reading to find out…

Banker

If you arrived at your bank for an appointment with the manager and you were greeted by someone wearing jeans and a slogan T-shirt, you’d probably think you were in the wrong office. Financial affairs are a serious matter, and anyone who works at a bank is expected to adopt a very formal dress code.

Working in a bank means handling sensitive financial information, and customers need to have confidence that bankers are professionals and will treat their personal data appropriately. At a higher level, bankers may be making big decisions about finance or delivering difficult financial news, and it’s essential to be dressed in a way that enables them to provide the information and be taken seriously.

Estate Agents

Many people make the mistake of thinking that the estate agent is looking after their interests. However, if you’re a buyer, the estate agent’s sole goal is to sell you a property, preferably one which costs as much as possible.

As a customer-facing sales job, estate agents must have an appealing and professional appearance at all times. Despite being on their feet all day showing prospective buyers around houses, they need to be formally attired in suits (for the men) and heels (for the women). The most successful ploy is to sell buyers the idea of a luxurious new lifestyle, and part of this technique is to look smart.

Casino Croupier or Host

A casino is arguably one of the most glamorous places you can visit, with players suited and booted for a high-class night out. If you visit a top casino or a VIP area, you might even see players wearing a tux or an evening dress. There’s an expectation that a casino will deliver a luxurious experience, making players feel as if they’d fit right in on the next James Bond movie!

To create that atmosphere, croupiers and hosts at casinos have to dress impeccably, with clothing, hair and makeup absolutely flawless in every way. You won’t ever find a casino host dressed casually, even in the budget casinos. When you step into a casino, you want to be swept away into another world, and hosts need to be appropriately dressed to create the right impression.

But it’s not just about physical casinos; the same approach is adopted for online play. There is an increasing number of live games available, which means you’ll be playing with a live host or dealer – just like in a real casino. This means there are many live dealer casino games and therefore loads of employment opportunities, but you’ll need to be prepared to dress up on screen. Online casino hosts must have professional croupier skills. As well as act and look just like a host would in a land casino.

News Anchor

look smart

When you switch on the TV to catch up with the news, you’d be shocked if the newsreader was donning a slogan T-shirt and a pair of jeans. While their clothing doesn’t affect their ability to deliver the news, it conveys an air of casualness that is likely to be highly inappropriate.

Formal clothing, such as suits, has a natural gravitas and dignity. The news often contains sobering reports, and it’s right for the news anchor to be respectful in the way they dress.

It’s not just about being too casual; it’s also about ensuring no offense is caused. Female presenters should look smart and elegant, rather than appearing as if they’re about to head out to a nightclub in a skimpy outfit. Likewise, for male presenters, their legs may look great in a pair of shorts, but that’s best reserved for a day at the beach rather than in their professional capacity.

Legal Profession

There are many reasons you might see a solicitor or lawyer, and most of them are very serious. You could be writing a Will, buying a house, creating a business partnership or even getting divorced. As a client, you need to be certain that you’re putting your trust in someone who is an expert professional and dressing suitably helps to convey this impression.

Reputation is key in the legal profession, and that’s one of the reasons why appearances are so important. If a lawyer looks disheveled and untidy, it will be hard to have faith in their ability to deal with your sensitive affairs in an efficient and organized way. Conversely, if your legal representative is smart, attentive, and well-dressed, you’ll get the impression that they are a successful individual who has the qualities you need. And of course, you’ll probably end up mentioning your solicitor to other people, which is why they cannot afford to look less than their best.
