Deciding on a career can be tricky, some people are born knowing; some know in high school, others find out when they matriculate; and a vast majority still don’t have it figured out long after they’ve graduated. That’s why you find people with several career changes over the years, they are simply trying to find their niche.

With so many options in the world, the possibilities are endless when it comes to careers. There are also many advances in technology that afford you the ability to create your own stream of income and your very own business online.

Millennials have taken over in this department, and are breaking the bank by utilizing social media platforms to produce creative content.

Back in the day, it was commendable to be an expert in one trade so that everyone would come to you for that particular thing; but now you have to be well versed in a multitude of things to be successful; that’s where taking a side move comes in to play in regards to your career. When it comes to your career this is something you will be investing your life into.

This isn’t a job, something that you are doing just to get by, this is something you are passionate about, extremely interested in, and something you stamp your name on.

Careers are dependent upon taking risks. You have to have an enormous belief in yourself, credentials that match, and a drive unmatched to secure the career that you seek. For you to be successful that means investing time, patience, and having an open mind to change. There may be detours in your path and you must be willing to embrace them.

Career changes may be for the better because you may discover that you like something more than you expected. There have been countless examples of times that people have strayed away from a career path they were expected to have, and the outcome was far greater.

Singer, rapper, songwriter, and producer Ryan Leslie is a prime example of taking a side move and advancing himself in regards to his career change. Ryan Leslie graduated from Harvard University at age 19 with a degree in government, and a concentration in political science and macroeconomics.

However, music was his true passion which is ultimately what he decided to pursue. So instead of getting an expected job in the field of his degree, he took a detour and the outcome was beneficial to him as he is living his dream and he is able to support himself as his art is very successful. Through his actions, Leslie’s side interest became his best interest.

Hobbies are a great outlet to find career ideas. You can try new things and decide what you like and don’t. Hobbies are especially great to consider because if it’s something you love; you will do it often and for free (but of course, you want this to be of financial gain). The overall goal is to do something you love so it never feels like a chore or a job.

Side moves don’t always come in the form mentioned above, instances in life may also be a factor. Witnessing a terrible accident may make you want to become an EMT; a great book may interest you in becoming an author or helping an elderly person in the grocery store could make you want to work in a retirement home.

Inspiration is limitless, but when you are called to do something the signs are omnipresent. If you are unsure of what career choice to choose, what the next step should be, or where your life is going, think about your happiness.

It’s really that simple. Think about what would make you get out of bed in the morning anticipating the day; Whatever that is is what you’re supposed to do.

So go out into this enormous world unafraid and full of wonder. Engage in the endless opportunities and possibilities and welcome what may come. You never know what or who could advance you further in your career.

They say ‘sometimes it’s not what you know but who you know.’ Career changes are like the extra $200 you get in monopoly money every time you pass go; you don’t want to miss it. Don’t miss out on opportunities because of fear or self-doubt; know that you are worthy and capable. Start networking and putting yourself out there.

Once you believe in yourself, you can convince others of your talent and that career will find you; but you have to do the first step because it all starts with you.
