Cardi is an icon and always has been. The former stripper is notable, not only for her music career, but also for her amazing style and wild personality. Cardi B’s Bartier Cardi music video shows off her wild and fun side that we have come to love. Though it is not one of the most meaningful pieces of art, we still love it. The video is well crafted and full of Cardi goodness.
Color Scheme
Bartier Cardi goes through a series of monotone colors that evolve as the video progresses. In the beginning, all the girls are wearing pastel shades of pink and blue. This contests to Cardi who is in full red lingerie. It shows Cardi as dominant or set apart from others in her video, which juxtaposes with the female models who have a sunny aesthetic. Later Cardi is dressed all in white, while her male counterpart is in red. This change is color shows his submission to her, while she has moved on.
Along with this, the female models in the background evolve to have a wider color pallet. All this contrasts to a mostly neutral backgrounds. What color is shown in the setting is far more subdued than the costumes, such as the yellow bathtub compared to the pink outfits. The color story in this music video echoes the meaning of the song while evolving over time.
Lighting
We couldn’t talk about the color scheme without talking about the lighting given the overlap between the two. Much like the beginning of the video shows ladies dressed in pink and blue, the shirtless men in the video are lit in pink and blue. This creates a parallel in the gender dynamics in the video. Also, the men are always shown in partial darkness, whereas the ladies start the video in bright sunlight. The juxtaposition between light and dark is best shown in moments when there is a dark room with a bright tv playing that has Cardi B in the center. We see Cardi’s money and Cartier jewels as the bright spot (literally) in this video. Furthermore, the lighting darkens as the video progresses. This shows the passage of time as Cardi lives her party lifestyle.
The Jewels

There is no coincidence that the song title is a play on Cardi B and Cartier. Even the cheapest Cartier jewelry sells for thousands of dollars, and are an immense sign of wealth. Throughout the video the jewels that Cardi B and her background models wear are fabulous. We see pearls, diamonds, and much much more. It is Cardi B flaunting her wealth, and even though we are jealous, we also love it. Who doesn’t dream of being draped in priceless jewels just because they can?
Retro Vibes
The Bartier Cardi music video gives us major throwback vibes. This is mainly displayed through elements in the background such as the old-fashioned TVs through which we see Cardi B singing. There is also the cinematography which is styled, in parts, to look like it was filmed on an 8mm camera. On top of this, there are statues throughout the video that are reminiscent of Greek antiquity. All of this combines to show the long-lasting power of wealth that Cardi has. But whether or not any of this is meaningful, we love it for the aesthetic.
Wardrobe Choices
All the wardrobe choices in Bartier Cardi are hot as hell. Cardi B goes through several pieces of lingerie before coming out in a fabulous white dress in the end. She is always decked out in some kind of fur, which is always a different color based on her outfit. Her backup looks amazing as well. The ladies have makeup that coordinates with their outfit color scheme and jewelry. Though those in the background dress less flashy than Cardi B, they still look amazing. They evolve from day time pastels to their night time party outfits. Plus there is the costuming, or lack thereof, on the men. The men only where silver spandex throughout the video. With all their abs it makes some wonderful eye candy.
All Girl Party
Cardi B may be singing in gender-neutral terms about her wealth, but we know that she is here for the girls. The party at the end shows only women dancing, while the men stand around as servants or eye candy. It connects with women who just want to go out and have fun with their gal pals. The love between ladies is where it is really at.
The Focus on Minorities
As a woman of color, Cardi B likes to feature other POC in her work. This is extremely important given the music and entertainment industry’s focus on those who are white, often at the cost of POC. But Cardi B takes control of what originated as a black music genre and continues to support her community. There are only two white people in this video, both of whom are wearing Star of David necklaces. Even when delving into the white performing world, Cardi B includes minorities. Though it is unclear if the two white models are in fact Jewish, the symbolism demonstrates a desire to represent marginalized communities. Although Bartier Cardi is not making a profound statement on race and oppression, representation of marginalized groups is still important.
