We know Lizzo likes big boys, itty-bitty boys, inner-city boys, Mississippi boys, and even the pretty boys. But what do we have yet to learn about the iconic, Grammy award-winning singer? While we have all listened to her music on repeat, you probably don’t know anything about her. You probably don’t know her real name, or where she is from, or what she is really about. But is you want to learn all the answers to questions like “How old is Lizzo?” or “Is Lizzo married?” we have the answers for you. Be prepared to learn everything you need to know.

Basic Facts

If you want to get to know Lizzo, you probably should understand the basics of who she is. Before you learn what makes her tick, you need to know the basic facts.

Lizzo is 32 years old. She was born in 1988 on April 27 in Detroit, Michigan to mother Shari Johnson-Jefferson. Though we all know her as Lizzo to all her fans, her birth name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson. And despite being born in Detroit, she was actually raised in Houston. She has two older siblings, and her father died in back in 2010. Lastly Lizzo is 5’10” making her a tall and beautiful goddess.

Body Positivity

Anyone who loves Lizzo knows that she is a curvy woman. And a significant portion of her music focuses on body positivity. She is not limited by societal constructs of beauty, and she is all about being yourself. Her plus size status does not stop her from being a sex symbol. And why should it? Lizzo is a beautiful woman. Size does not affect how attractive someone is. Despite societal pressures, Lizzo proves that big girls are just as beautiful and sexy as anyone else.

She also motivates people to stay healthy in her workout videos. Lizzo proves that health and size are not the same thing. She was recently quoted saying “I’m not working out to have your ideal body type.” Her size is what empowers her, and it has nothing to do with how healthy she is. Lizzo is truly a body positivity icon.

Lizzo’s Music Skills Go Beyond Singing

We all know that Lizzo has an incredible voice, which lead her to be nominated for tons of awards. But her other musical talents might surprise you. Lizzo has been playing the flute since middle school, and she is great at it. Since she started she has been a hardcore marching band kid. When attending college at the University of Houston she studied flute, while continuing on her time in marching band.

Everyone is so adjusted to musicians who play guitar or piano. Lizzo’s love for flute is a refreshing and unique change of pace. It reminds us that even amazing famous musicians have pasts as dorky kids. She is truly an icon for all the band kids out there. Lizzo is changing up the music industry in more ways than one.

LGBTQ+?

Lizzo has never confirmed her sexuality publicly, but that is probably due to a dislike of labels. She has been known for playing pride festivals and working as an ally for the queer community. When it comes to her own identity she chooses not to label herself. She is quoted saying “When it comes to sexuality or gender, I personally don’t ascribe to just one thing. I cannot sit here right now and tell you I’m just one thing […] That’s why the colors for LGBTQ+ are a rainbow! Because there’s a spectrum, and right now we try to keep it black and white. That’s just not working for me.” So however she feels about herself, it’s probably not in the binary that society is used to. However Lizzo wants to define herself, we support her.

Black Lives Matter

With the recent outbreak of protests and riots around the country after the death of George Floyd, Lizzo couldn’t stay silent. She, and other celebrities, showed her support for protestors around the country who are fighting to end police brutality. Her music career began in Minneapolis, so she is especially connected to the problems there. Although the sit-in she was supposed to attend in Los Angeles was cancelled, Lizzo has still been sending her support to the people risking their lives to make a better world.

Nothing New

Lizzo raise to popularity escalated exponentially in 2019, leading her to be nominated as best new artist at the Grammy’s. But while Lizzo is new to some people, her music has been around for a while. “Truth Hurts”, the anthem of 2019, was actually released two years previously. We could have been listening to her music for years, but somehow we didn’t see her genius soon enough. Similarly, her song “Good as Hell” was released back in 2016, but didn’t gain a massive following until last year. She has been releasing amazing music for years, and it is about time she was recognized for it.
