Dragon Ball Z was released in the late 80s and it is still pretty popular today. Even people who do not care about anime have heard of this popular series. This universe had multiple shows, lots of movies, mangas, video games, and a card game. The plot is often boiled down to good vs evil as the protagonists adventure to defeat various antagonists. The majority of the shows focus on protagonist Goku and the Z warriors. However, one of the best characters in the show is a young woman named Videl. She is talked about much less than some other characters, but she is a fascinating character.
Videl’s Personality
Videl has a very entertaining personality. Her name is an anagram for “devil” (this is possibly a reference to her father’s nickname), although that could not represent her personality any less. Throughout the show, she is very honest as she values honesty greatly. She is consistently determined to achieve her goals. She grows a lot throughout the series though.
When she is first introduced she is a little standoffish. Videl is very tough and watches others closely. She notices things that most others do not see. Sadly, she has a lot of walls up presumably because she was raised near her father’s fame. However, over the course of the series, she becomes softer with other characters. She is always very forgiving and kind to her loved ones. She becomes an almost maternal character to others. Videl is rather heroic and fights for justice often.
Her Parents
Videl’s parents were happily married. There is not much to know about her mother. Videl’s mother’s name is Miguel. Her mother is never actually in the manga or anime because she died of a fatal heart virus sometime after giving birth to Videl. Audiences are told that Videl looks extremely similar to her mother. Her mother was also known to be an incredible singer.
Videl’s father is in the series a lot. He goes by “Mr. Satan” but his real name is Mark. He is very tall, very strong, and very into himself. He can be very greedy and self-centered. While some of his boastings are warranted as he is incredibly strong, many characters (and audiences) find it over the top. However, no matter how much he loves himself, he is also genuinely kind-hearted.
Mr. Satan cares deeply about doing what is just. He wants to violently protect the innocent from the cruel villains of the story. He has an exceptionally large ego, but he is ultimately very caring towards others in his life including his daughter.
Videl and Mr. Satan
Videl has a very up-and-down relationship with her father. She finds him pompous and overprotective of her. She believes he is overprotective due to her mother’s death, though she finds that unfair. Mr. Satan uses his fame several times to sleep with women after the death of his wife. Videl hates this selfish action and the two of them get into a fight over it.
She does eventually forgive him and even admits that he might not have always been the one trying to seduce someone in those situations (implying the women might have hit on him). As they both grow throughout the show they begin to make amends and grow closer as father and daughter.
Videl’s Romantic Relationship
Her love interest, Gohan is one of the main characters in the series. He is the oldest son of the main character, Goku, and he is very strong and powerful. He does not fight for enjoyment like many others in the show and in his family. Instead, he fights only to protect others.
These kind and honest sides to Gohan are what led Videl to fall in love with him. She admitted that she loved his shy and strong personality during a heartfelt conversation between the two of them. The two eventually fall deeper and deeper in love and get married. They then have a child together.
Powers and Appearances
Videl only uses physical attacks which is very different from others in the show. As a smaller character, she often waits for her larger opponent to attack before turning their attack around on them. She uses their own momentum against them. Videl is also able to fly after Gohan teaches her. She has been in several games, movies, and mangas related to the show itself.
Videl is an amazingly powerful and compelling character. She has a lot of character development despite not being the main character of the show. Her growth is as inspiring as her kindness. Luckily, the show and manga treat her like the strong woman she is rather than sexualizing her like many animes are guilty of doing with their female characters. While she is not talked about as often as the main cast, she has certainly won over the hearts of viewers.
