Her roles as Tara Thorton and Nova Bordelon in the HBO television series True Blood and Queen Sugar earned her immense fame and popularity. Wesley vehemently stands up for the LGBT community in various public forums. A tweet suggested that Wesley’s character should be written better in Queen Sugar. S/he felt that the character swung both ways (gay to straight). Rutina retweeted, saying, “It’s called Bi-sexuality and you don’t have to like or comment about it.”

Rutina Wesley started her career with David Hare’s Broadway play The Vertical in December 2006. She also appeared in a minor role in Hitch (2005), which the director layout in the final cut. In 2007, she made her debut as the protagonist in How She Move. In the film, Wesley portrayed a woman participating in a dance competition to fund her education.
