When it comes to landing your dream job, the key lies in having the perfect resume! Whether you’re looking for the best New York jobs or you’re just browsing, these are some tips that everyone should know. Your resume is the opportunity to showcase your career and achievements in the work world!
It can be hard to decide what exactly you should be putting on your resume. How exactly do you sum up your entire career onto a piece of paper? And all while looking professional at the same time?
Well have no fear and look no further! I’ve put together a list of some of the best tricks that will help you clean up and create the perfect resume! I find that the more you apply to jobs, the more experience you have with finding what makes the perfect resume! Happy job hunting!
1) Narrow It Down To One Page
I understand that it can be hard not to go overboard in talking about yourself on the resume. After all, no one can brag about your career better than yourself! However, it’s important to keep all of your information narrowed down to one page in order to start cleaning and perfecting your resume.
I was told once that potential employees will sometimes skip right by your resume if it’s more than one page! Because they probably have plenty of applicants and resumes to review, they don’t have the time to read long and lengthy resumes.
Because of this, narrowing down the info to one page is crucial in the job field. This applies to both applying to jobs online on sites such as Indeed and for in-person interviews and applications as well!
2) Keep Each Job Summarized To 2-3 Bullet Points
One thing that I find to be super helpful when reviewing or writing my resume is to summarize each of your past jobs into 2-3 bullet points. It helps with what I just mentioned, which is keeping it down to one page.
Another important thing to keep in mind is that sometimes less is more! If a recruiter only has a certain amount of time to review your resume on top of hundreds more, they can only read so much! Which is why it’s up to you to create the perfect resume!
How to stand out? Get rid of the clutter! I find that summarizing my past job roles in 2-3 bullets is the perfect amount in order to highlight your main goals and achievements while working there!
3) Break Down Your Info Into Separate Categories and Showcasing The Most Important At The Top
As I just mentioned, keeping your resume clutter-free is key here! One of the best ways to do so is by breaking down your information into separate categories. For example, separate your education from your achievements, regardless of if they happened during their school years! Things such as academic of public service achievements are important information and should be showcased accordingly!
Another important thing to keep in mind is you should attempt to cater your resume to the specific job that you are applying to! What I mean when I say this is employers want to see what you are able to bring to their particular company and the position that you are applying for!
For example, if you are applying for a babysitting or nannying position and you have earned certifications about that, put that up at the top! You want to highlight your relevant achievements because you want the recruiter or employer to see that before anything else.
4) Be Number Specific
While taking a Strategies of Business Communications class at the Fashion Institute of Technology, there’s one thing that has stuck with me. My professor gave us a great tip when it comes to creating the perfect resume and landing the job!
The answer is to be specific when it comes down to numbers. For example, if you previously worked in sales, put down how much money you helped the company make in total sales revenue! Or, if you do social media, make sure to track your growth!
Employers love to see the numbers. Anyone can say they helped grow a social media account or make a sale, yet the proof is in the pudding! Being specific when it comes to your numbers can allow you to set yourself apart from others and puts somewhat of numerical value on the work you have done!
5) Play Around With The Format and Design
When it comes to resumes, I do find that simplicity is key! However, that does not mean that you can’t have fun with it at the same time! Although the classic listed method works, you may want to try out a new format or design to stand out from the crowd!
Unsure where to start? Well, lucky for you, platforms such as Google Docs and Canva have some really great resume templates that you can choose from! And the best part? They’re completely customizable.
Regardless of whether or not you need or want to change the design, I often find that something as simple as moving some of the blocks around can give it a fresh feel, leaving you with the perfect resume!
Now that you have some basic tips for creating the perfect resume, it’s time to get started! And remember, the name of the game is to stand out in the best way through the eyes of the employer! Wishing you the best of luck!
