Sometimes life comes and knocks you right off your feet. The tragedy is; sometimes it happens when one is at the prime of their lives and at a time when they are the happiest. Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp has, however, taught us that despite what life throws at you, never let it steal your joy. Her story is one of great tragedy, only profoundly felt by those who were close to her.
Who is Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp?
Melissa Lynn Henning-Camps is best known for being the first wife of famous American gospel singer and songwriter Jeremy Camp. She was born on October 7th, 1979, in Southern Carolina. The name of her father is not known to the public, but her mother is Janette Henning. She grew up alongside her two siblings – sisters Heather Dalton Henning and Megan Henning.
Melissa’s mother, Janette Henning, was a staunch follower of the Christ Born out Of The Jesus movement in 1970 and raised her daughters to be strong believers of Jesus Christ. Melissa took her faith seriously, and her love for Christ was evident in the person she was. She had a great love for the people around her; she was a darling to everyone who knew her.

Her Husband, Jeremy Camp
Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp’s Jeremy Camp is a renowned American gospel musician and songwriter who hails from Lafayette, Indiana. Jeremy has four RIAA- certified gold albums and has released seven other albums. His style of music is ballads and up-tempo songs with a bit of soft rock influence.
Jeremy’s music is quite influential in the United States; he has had 32 chart-topping hits in the contemporary genre. His most popular track, ‘Let it Fade,’ has once been the number one most loved song for ten weeks straight on the radio. One of his albums- Beyond Measure, has also had six number one hits.
He has achieved a great feat in the music industry and has bagged nominations for a Grammy and an AMA. In addition, he has won 5 GMA dove awards and can boast of being a part of many live shows. Like his wife Melissa, Jeremy has a strong faith in Christ and is part of a worship team that plays all over Southern California.
How Melissa and Jeremy Camp Met
Melissa and Jeremy met while worshiping at a bible study in 1999. Jeremy was leading the congregation in a worship song when he noticed Melissa with her hands raised high in worship. He was immediately drawn to her, and they soon after connected and started dating. Melissa would, however, soon end the relationship because she did not want to be distracted from the plans God had for her or her faith in God.
Her Tragic Story
In 2000, Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Jeremy, who had remained friends with her, despite their separation, went to visit her at the hospital, and in the process, they rekindled their romance.
The pair took their relationship to the next level soon after, Jeremy proposed to Melissa within the same year. Jeremy was well aware of Melissa’s diagnosis, but his love for her triumphed the fear of the disease.
A month before their wedding, Melissa got the incredible news that her cancer had miraculously disappeared, and she was going to be cancer-free! That was a very welcome respite for the 21-year old. Melissa and Jeremy went on to have a beautiful wedding in October of 2002, surrounded by friends and family.

The tragedy is Melissa never got to enjoy her newly married life nor husband. Barely three months after her wedding, Melissa started feeling sick after returning from her honeymoon, prompting her to see the doctor. She received the devastating news that her cancer had returned, and it had spread to all parts of her body. By now, it was too little too late, and there was nothing the doctors could do to help her.
Melissa was given only a few weeks to live. She received the news quite positively and would spend her last days singing and worshiping God. It was her belief that God was working through her, and her last words were, ‘If just one life comes to know Jesus through my cancer, it will all be worth it. She succumbed to the lethal disease On February 5th, 2001, at the young age of 21.
In Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp’s Honor
The movie I Still Believe was released in honor of Melissa Lynn Henning-Camp and the love she shared with Jeremy Camp. Jeremy has also released two songs, Walk by Faith and I Still Believe, in memory of his loving wife.
Her mother, Janette Henning, has also released a book in memory of her daughter titled Melissa If One Life. Her sisters are also committed to sharing her story and teaching about God’s word.
