Marni Yang is fighting for her innocence after being found guilty of the murder of Rhoni Reuter. The 53-year-old was found guilty for the 2007 murder which occurred inside Reuter’s home. Although she claims she is innocent, prosecutors believe her to be jealous of Reuter who was dating Chicago Bears player Shaun Gayle. Yang and Gayle were having an affair even though Gayle was expecting a child with Reuter at the time.
The case of Marni Yang is a pretty interesting one and for those who enjoy crime cases. Yang is currently serving two life sentences and is still claiming she’s innocent. Below we take a look at some shocking facts about the case that have been unveiled over the years.
Marni Yang and Shaun Gayle’s Affair
Marni Yang was a single mother of three when she meets Shaun Gayle in 2005. The pair meet as Yang is working security at a Chicago Bears convention. Yang is also a realtor at the time and their relationship begins professionally but then turns sexual, Gayle even admits to sleeping with her the night before his girlfriend died.
Even though the relationship is purely sexual, those close to Yang claim that she became obsessed. During the prosecution in the trial, they say she hacked into his computer. Unfortunately, Yang is not the only woman Gayle is having an affair with at the time, despite expecting a baby with Reuter. He is found to have had 17 girlfriends at the time which Yang ends up contacting!
Also, during the 2011 trial for the shooting of Reuter, he admits to having over a dozen sexual partners. Aside from having all these affairs, he does admit in the trial he was excited to be a parent.
Using these contact she sends a note to Rhoni Reuter warning her of the other women, even though she is one of them. Within the note, Marni Yang writes, “ I think you would like to know what your boyfriend Shaun is doing with other women.”
Marni Yang Confesses To The Murder
Despite the fact that Yang claims she is innocent, a close friend of hers says Yang confesses to her. Christie Paschen testifies that Yang described spotting an ultrasound photo of Reuter’s baby on the fridge after shooting her. Yang also told her about seeing baby clothes piled on a table and said she took a bracelet she saw lying on a counter.
Also, Paschen claims that Yang admits weeks before the murder that she plans on killing Reuter, after finding out she’s pregnant with Gayles baby.
“I was trying to talk her out of doing it, I really didn’t believe she would do it. I didn’t think she could.” Paschen says. Also, she claims to give Yang advice to not kill Reuter and which Yangs says that she will think about. Unfortunately, she ends up going through with it.
Fighting For Her Innocence
At the moment Yang is serving a double life sentence but claims she is innocent. According to an emergency petition filed by attorney lee stone, Yang has asthma, Type 2 diabetes, and a compromised immune system. In the petition, it says they are worried about her coming in contact with COVID-19.
Also, they are hoping that her sentence is commuted to time served and for her release as quickly as possible. Aside from her health issues, they are also working to prove that she was not at the crime scene.
An acclaimed forensic pathologist is claiming that injuries found on Reuter happened several days before the murder. Not only this but that the angle of the gunshots has to have been fired by someone taller than Yang. “This is just more proof to us that Marni Yang is not the killer. I believe whoever beat up Rhoni Reuter two days before is the killer,” says Steve LaPino of MSI Investigations.
Marni Yang is still facing time behind bars and breaks her silence in a 20/20 interview last year. “I did not [kill Reuter], and I am not capable of doing anything like [that]. I’m a mother myself, that’s unconscionable to me. Absolutely not,” she tells ABC’s Juju Chang in the 20/20 interview.
Family members of Reuter say they believe Yang is guilty and needs to continue to do her time behind bars.
