Faux locs have been the biggest trends lately in hairstyles, it has been present on the runway, the red carpets, and all over the industry ever since it debuted. Artists like Taraji Henson, Teyana Taylor, Tyra Banks, Meagan Good, Willow Smith, even top recording artists Rihanna and Nicki Minaj have been spotted rocking the faux locs in red carpet events, and somehow they look amazing every single time they do.

Hairstyles like faux locs are beautiful and celebrate a rich culture, but they aren’t as easy to take care of as you think. They may be known for being low-maintenance, but it still needs special treatment and care so they stay looking fresh and stay looking the best they can be.

In this guide, you are going to find out the best ways to take care of your faux locs from the day you have them placed on you until the day you decide to have them removed or replaced.

They aren’t dreads!

Traditional Locs are meant to last a lifetime, while faux locs are meant to last at least five weeks. When there is new growth from the traditional locs, retwisting the new hair is normal, but when dealing with faux locs, it is not recommended to twist the newly grown hair attached to faux locs. Remember, faux locs are not to last too long, and they are not supposed to be a replacement or permanent extension to your real hair, make sure to have them replaced or taken off after the specified time.

Hydrate all the hair underneath

Never forget to purchase oils and conditioners specifically for your faux locs. You would want to keep your hair hydrated as much as possible, and oil is the best way to keep the hydration in. When the faux locs start weighing down on your roots, oil can keep the moisture in and all the harmful effects of the sun away.

You won’t be shampooing or conditioning regularly because of the faux locs, and you will not be able to move the hair around too much to refresh it with shampoo either, so oils are your best bet at keeping your hair bouncy and fresh. Coconut oil and Castor oil are highly recommended because they were designed specifically to keep the moisture in, these two are amazing when it comes to faux loc care and they have a reputation for really taking care of the newly grown hair as well.

Cleanse them regularly

Faux locs are installed so your natural hair is safe from the heat of the sun, that’s why they are referred to as a protective style.  They don’t exactly have to be washed while you are wearing them, but if you feel like they need to be cleaned, you can rinse your scalp twice a month with apple cider vinegar or products designed to keep your scalp oil in, and refresh your hair properly. Overdoing the cleanse may cause damage to the faux locs or your natural hair in the long term.

Silk Pillowcases

Trade your cotton or fabric pillowcases with satin and silk so that while you sleep or rest your head on a pillow, your pillowcases won’t absorb or rub the moisture out. Cotton fabric is known to do this while you sleep, which is why it is not recommended to use pillowcases that come in contact with your faux locs. In addition, avoid any rough fabrics that come in contact with your faux locs so that you can reduce damage to each loc over time, silk is your best friend when it comes to taking care of your locs

Get them from the right places

Make sure you do your research on the best places to get faux locs near you. Ask the specialist if they have experience installing faux locs and if they can recommend any products to take care of the locs you will be getting from them. Ask what material their faux locs are made from. It is essential that you get to know the stylist that will be working with your hair so you can sit back and relax while getting your hair done, knowing that you will be walking out of that salon looking like the Queen that you are!

At the end of the day, faux locs are still very low-maintenance and easy to manage compared to other styles. The risk that your hair will end up damaged is very low and the maintenance is very affordable, as long as you follow this guide, your hair will stay looking fresh and you won’t have any problems making sure you get your money’s worth from those beautiful faux locs. Slay the game with a fresh hairstyle and have them wondering how you keep it so fresh!
