The CW show The Vampire Diaries was first released on September 10th, 2009. This show was an instant hit. Part of this show’s allure was the incredibly attractive love interests. As soon as it came to the eyes of the public the shipping wars began. Who should Elena end up with? Are you Team Stefan or Team Damon Salvatore? No matter where your loyalties lie, it is hard to deny how charming and tempting both cursed boys are. While both are great, here are the top five reasons to love Damon Salvatore.
Damon Salvatore Is Funny
The Vampire Diaries is an incredibly dramatic show. It literally begins with a car crash and vampire attack combo. This obviously makes sense, if the show were a comedy it would not fit in the sexy undead young adult genre. Without any comic relief, however, the show would be way too dark to appreciate. That is where Damon Salvatore comes in. He was often the comic relief of this dramatic show. Compilations of the funniest Damon Salvatore moments can be found all over YouTube. His quippy and sarcastic one-liners really ease some of the built-up tension in the dramatic show.
Damon Is Caring
Despite being written as uncaring and aloof at the beginning of the show, Damon Salvatore is actually incredibly caring. His relationship with his brother Stefan shows this. Damon is ultimately very protective of his younger brother. While the two have their fair share of disagreements they also share a strong bond. Damon even sacrifices himself to save his little brother, Stefan.
His caring nature is also shown in his friendships. Some of his close friends throughout the show include Alaric, Bonnie, and Enzo. Despite occasionally having tense relationships with these three, he is always there for them when they need it. He protects them vehemently and fights alongside them proudly.
Damon Salvatore Is Hot
Everyone on this show is hot from Matt to Bonnie to the main trio. The whole concept of this show is that the main girl is wanted by two hot vampire boys. This makes it pretty obvious that Damon Salvatore was always going to be hot. But that will not stop us from talking about just how hot he really is.
Damon Salvatore is incredibly handsome. He has dark messy hair and a strong jawline. Damon is very seductive and has a sexy smirk down to a science. He usually wears darker clothes and a leather jacket. Damon Salvatore is very confident. He knows he is attractive and calls himself “the eternal stud” to prove it.
Damon Grows Throughout The Show
At the beginning of the show, the vampire, Damon Salvatore, is shown to be cruel and impulsive. He kills people without a second thought. Though, after meeting Elena Gilbert, his kindness started to show. He partially resents it at first. Damon Salvatore even accuses Elena of trying to turn him into his well-behaved little brother. Despite this, he does change. Damon Salvatore shows that he can be loving, brave, and moral. Damon’s growth is displayed in a ginormous way when he sacrifices his own life for his brother’s at the end of season five. His growth throughout the show is also shown in the last reason to love him.
Damon Salvatore Is Good Without Elena
At the end of season six, Elena Gilbert’s character was written off of the show. This was due to the actress wanting to move on to other projects. She felt like all of Elena Gilbert’s stories had been told. To write her off a villain put her under a sleeping curse that was tied to Bonnie’s life. This meant that as long as Elena’s best friend, Bonnie, was alive, Elena would be asleep.
Damon Salvatore has always been the bad boy of the series. It is constantly shown and referenced that he acts solely based on his own desires. That is until Elena became a moral compass for him of course. With her out of the picture, would he return to his selfish ways? Fans were left wondering if Damon Salvatore, who was in love with Elena, would kill her best friend to bring her back.
It was then made clear that he would not. Damon Salvatore had grown and would continue to act morally with or without Elena in his life. He even used to have a tense relationship with Bonnie. However, during Elena’s slumber, Bonnie and Damon Salvatore became best friends. Some fans even shipped the two of them.
Damon Salvatore is the total package. He is such an interesting character, it is clear the writers enjoyed creating him. Not only is he a sexy bad boy, he cares about people, has a great sense of humor, and has so much personal growth throughout the show. He could have been such a basic character, but they made him way more interesting. Damon Salvatore was more than the bad boy of the love triangle. Regardless of whether or not you think he should have ended up with Elena, you cannot deny how great of a character Damon Salvatore was to watch.
