Founded in 2011 by Chrissy Fitchl, Apotheke came into being from her passion for soap-making, scent formulation, and essential oils. Once she discovered the beauty of essential oils, she started sourcing ingredients directly from farms. Eventually, she was self-taught the art of soap-making in her kitchen! In the summer of 2012, Apotheke started its first factory, a 3000 sq. foot site in Brooklyn, New York. Her husband, Sebastian Picasso, put on the production lead hat, helping the brand retain its philosophy of offering high-quality luxury goods made closer to home by real people.

The company started by selling soaps at farmer’s markets. Yes, you heard that right! During their initial days of struggle, the team sold soaps and candles at flea markets in Brooklyn. Though they were not appropriately packaged and were quite oddly shaped, there were zero compromises on the ingredients used.
