Going out is fun and all, but sometimes you just want to Netflix and chill. There’s no shame in staying in all day and watching movies with your favorite girls or your bae. With so many good movies available right now, it’s hard to know where to start. So NYGal has compiled a list of some of the best Netflix original movies streaming to help you decide which movie to watch first.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

This movie is very popular right now, and it’s worth all the hype. It’s about a girl who falls for a boy she ends up fake dating. After her love letters to her crushes get sent to all the boys, Lara Jean pretends to date Peter to downplay the letters. They end up spending a lot of time together and eventually fall for each other.

We know that the plot sounds a bit cheesy, and maybe it is, but we love cheesy love stories that have happy endings. Lana Condor and Noah Centineo make the perfect couple in this teen romance. We definitely recommend this movie.

Nappily Ever After

Nappily Ever After, starring Sanaa Lathan, shines a light on natural hair. Black women are often criticized for having curly or coarse hair. Lathan’s character, Violet, is seen with straight hair in the beginning of the movie. Her life seems perfect. She has a perfect job, perfect boyfriend, and perfect hair; but when her boyfriend calls her too perfect, it forces her to really look at her life.

In a drunken state, Violet shaves off all of her hair and wakes up the next morning shocked at what she sees in the mirror. Her whole life she’s worn long, straight hair and now that hair is gone. She eventually learns to love her new look and her new life.

This movie is important to so many black women who feel ashamed of their hair. If you struggle with your appearance, this movie may help change the way you view yourself. You will laugh and cry during this film and be happy you did.

Bright

If you’re searching for an action-packed film, Bright is the perfect choice for you. Everything Will Smith appears in is amazing. His character is a police officer who has to partner with a mythical creature to save a magical being. It takes place in America where humans coexist with other races, orks, elves, and so many more.

In what seems like a race war, the duo is an unlikely pair. The two don’t trust each other but have to rely on each other to survive. What happens, in the end, will shock you. Don’t miss out on this urban fantasy crime film!

The Week Of

Looking for a comedy to watch? The Week Of is it. This movie includes two of the funniest men in America, Adam Sandler, and Chris Rock. When these two get together, you know it’s going to be good. It’s about two fathers who come together the week before their children’s wedding. The men are clearly different, coming from different backgrounds; but they overcome their differences to give their children the best wedding possible.

This movie has mixed reviews, but don’t let that scare you off. It’s worth your time. Laugh your ass off with this funny duo.

Set It Up

Who doesn’t love a good romantic comedy? Set It Up includes a good cast and even better plot. When two assistants come together to get some space from their bosses, everything doesn’t go as planned. There is love, heartbreak, and growth in this movie.

This isn’t just a love story. It’s about chasing your dreams and striving for success, no matter what it takes. If this movie doesn’t motivate you to step it up in your job, we don’t know what will.

1922

October is just around the corner, which means you’re probably putting together your scary movie list. If you plan on staying in on Halloween, we suggest inviting bae over to watch this scary movie with you. 1922 comes from the Stephen King novel. You already know that everything Stephen King creates is memorable.

The movie is about a man who suffers horrible events after killing his wife. If you’re afraid of rats, look away because this movie is full of them. You’ll be shivering in your sheets after watching 1922.

Gaga: Five Foot Two

No one gets excited about documentaries. Unless it’s about Lady Gaga! You get a close look at her Superbowl performance and the making of her fifth album. You also get to see a vulnerable side of Lady Gaga that isn’t always shown. Sometimes we get lost in her crazy outfits and bold personality, and we forget that she goes through difficult times too. Find out all about the life of Lady Gaga in this exciting documentary.

Roxanne Roxanne

Every NYGal needs to watch Roxanne Roxanne. This movie is New York all the way. Roxanne is a rapper from Queens trying to survive an abusive relationship. It’s such a powerful movie that depicts a woman defying all odds. We rarely hear of movies concerned with women in rap. Roxanne refuses to be defined by her upbringing and proves to be a real inspiration.

6 Balloons

There is one word that best describes 6 Balloons: DRAMA! There’s a lot going on in this movie but in a good way. We love that it accurately portrays addiction, also that Dave Franco is a main character. Most movies get it wrong or try to make addiction a quick battle that everyone overcomes. Treating addiction is a long and difficult process. Learn more about the journey of drug addiction in this jaw-dropping film.

Gerald’s Game

Are you ready to squirm in your seats? Jessie is the main character in this movie who has to escape handcuffs after her husband dies during a sex game. She is forced to cut her hand to get out and in the process, she recounts painful memories. The movie received 90% of positive reviews. Just don’t watch it on a full stomach.

Pop some popcorn and prop your feet up. You enjoy a relaxing day filled with movies. Which one will you watch first?
