1. The History
NYC’s High Line was established as a linear park on a former railroad line which ran down the west side of Manhattan. Laying above the meatpacking district, these freight trains carried goods such as meat and cheeses. The track’s line receieved the nickname of “Death Avenue” because of its high number of freight accidents resulting in deaths.
In the mid-90s the trains were left adbandoned and some parts of the track were even disconnected. Then in 1999, it was proposed to repurpose the line into an elevated park in which people could spend the days gawking at the city views and exploring the gardens. And, that’s how The High Line came to be.
