Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Dynasty, are part of the plethora of television shows NYgals of all ages tune into on a daily. Although these shows contain interesting story lines along with characters who inspire women, the show that takes the cake home every year is Sex and the City as it is considered to be the show that’s shaped and inspired women all over the world to be career oriented, fashion forward, dating savvy, and so much more.

The show will make its 20 year debut this year as it aired on HBO back in June 6 of 1998. Even though Sex and the City will be two decades old, women all over the country watch re-runs of episodes and put both movies on repeat, especially the first movie that appeared on the big screen in 2008. With that being said, the big 2-0 needs to be celebrated and what better way to celebrate Sex and the City’s 20th than by watching a 3-day marathon on television?

Sex and the City Makes History

On June 6 of 1998, characters Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, and Miranda Hobbes stepped out of their apartments in search of the two L’s: Labels and Love. When women in Manhattan needed advice on relationships, friendships, and careers, Sex and the City was their salvation. Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte were in their mid-thirties as Samantha was in her forties throughout the series.

Regardless of their different natures and continuously changing sex lives, the girls remained inseparable and trusted one another with every secret in their book. The romantic-comedy series had a variety of ongoing storylines which engaged in important as well as modern social issues such as sexuality, safe sex, promiscuity, and femininity, while it delved into the differences between friendships and romantic relationships. The four characters’ past was intentionally omitted from the series as the show’s writers found it better to explore the social life, sex, and relationships each woman experienced, as they all had different yet individual perspectives.
