Detoxing has transformed from requirement to fad in recent years by promoting health retreats, spas, and detox teas. For extreme pain during periods, it is normal for women to believe that these cleansing agents could alleviate their pain.

Headaches, cramps, bloating, mood swings, and breast tenderness have frequent visits in a woman’s body during the 4-7 days of the cycle. They might be torturous, but eliminating these symptoms with medicines could do more harm than good. So, can detoxing help in pain relief during periods?

What Is Detoxing?

Detoxing is done in many different ways. Most detox methods promote the sole consumption of juices for almost three to five days. While this can effectively help remove toxins in the body, it causes a shortage of essential proteins, fats, and carbohydrates necessary for running the body.

Women around the world are split on the decision to detox during their menstrual cycle. Some believe that cleansing the system when the body is already eliminating in the form of blood can be harmful. Others say that a different detoxing plan to suit your body can reboot your system.

To better understanding whether detoxing during the menstrual cycle is right for you or not, it’s important to know more about PMS.

What Is Premenstrual Syndrome?

Premenstrual Syndrome or PMS is a condition affecting emotions and physical health. It generally occurs a week or two before periods, but some women also experience it during their cycle. More than 90% of menstruating women are affected by this condition, yet the cause of this problem remains unknown.

During certain times of the month, progesterone and estrogen levels significantly increase to cause problems like anxiety, irritability, and mood swings. This period is named PMS, and it usually goes away on the first day of periods. More than 80% of women face one or two symptoms that don’t affect their daily activities, but the remaining proportion deal with problems that affect every or some aspect of their life.

Cleansing involves eliminating dairy, coffee, and sugar entirely from the diet. This can be the more significant reason for extreme feelings to surface as you start detoxifying your body. Whether you are on your periods or not, cleansing causes hormone adjustment and fluctuation. This process is entirely normal.

Generally, the process of detoxifying affects elimination and digestion, energy states, and mood, as well as the flow of blood during menstruation. The last condition does not apply to all because many women see no harmful effect on their blood flow levels because of cleansing. 

Women who face the trouble of irregular periods will notice that their periods become regular in some months. This is why if you see a change in your period dates, don’t panic. Your period could also be shorter or longer and heavier or lighter for the coming months. But the long-lasting effects of the process are worth the little problems.

If you take oral contraceptives for birth control, double up on your method because the cleansing process also affects your medications like birth control. 

Best Time For Detoxing

Women who face severe symptoms of PMS should avoid starting their detoxing plan for at least one week before their menses. The best time to begin is around the week after your period for the month ends. It will give your body the required time to cope with the sudden changes. 

Self Care During Periods

Small to medium PMS symptoms can be avoided by removing dairy and coffee from your diet. During your menses, try to add some healthy fats like avocados to your meals to keep your body satisfied and mood balanced. The high mineral content in raspberry tea leaf is also good for cleansing your uterus.

A plant-derived supplement will provide the necessary support when you plan on washing your body during your periods. It will also help in soothing inflammation, controlling acne, and balancing insulin levels. Many studies have also shown that a significant factor for treating Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS can be commonly found in berberine.

No matter what part of your period cycle you choose to start detoxing, it will always be beneficial in the long run.
