NYGal was fortunate enough to be introduced to TIAAN, an up-and-coming artist who is making waves in the music industry. We immediately loved her unique sound.
So, we wanted to get to know this start just a little bit more. TIAAN, managed by Band of Others, was more than generous with her answers to our questions!
How did your musical journey start?
I have been singing since I could talk. It came very naturally to me. And, I started writing songs when I was about 15. My dad helped me record my first song and I remember the look on his face hearing the lyrics and realizing that his baby girl was messing with stupid boys!
But, I started professionally when I was 18 after graduating high school. I jumped straight into my dad’s band and we played all over Australia and abroad. My first overseas gig was in Dubai.
And, when I realized I could be paid to travel and perform for a living, doing what I love, I thought, what a dream!
What music inspires you?
I have always listened to an eclectic range of music. My mum loved playing everything from Santana to Evanescence and everything in between.
My dad performs songs from Luther Vandross to Gladys Knight. I was obsessed with Britney Spears and all the teen pop icons at the most impressionable time in my life. So, it’s always been very random.
But, when I discovered Sade something really stuck with me. Her understated vocals and deep story-telling lyrics really hit me and I have been a huge fan all of my life. Till this day she’s my go-to when I listen to music.
One of my favorite artists now though, is Christine and the Queens.
What are you most excited about right now?
I am most excited about the fact that I am about to release a single after 4 years! Ruin It will be available on all platforms February 8th. It’s a big deal to me because I worked really hard and unfortunately, crappy circumstances have held me back from performing and releasing music BUT I’m back and more ready than ever to get the ball rolling again!
Who are your biggest supporters?
My biggest supporters would have to be my family. My mum likes to say she’s my number one fan and since she gave birth to me I believe her!
Do you have any stories about your fans?
A long time ago, back in Sydney Australia, where I was born and raised, I was walking into a bar and a group of girls
I got a little funny because it made me feel awkward that they were just gawking at me. One of them started saying something to her friends whilst still starring, so, me, with all my attitude, walked closer to them and said: “Is there something you’d like to share?” And, she just shouted “TIAAN! Are you Tiaan?!” I said “Yes”, very surprised and she just crumbled and said she was a huge fan and couldn’t believe I was standing in front of her
So, I felt bad obviously and gave her a hug and took a pic with her. It was extremely flattering and now I just accept stares instead of getting my knickers in a twist about it!
What keeps you going every day?
Pizza! I’m only half-kidding with that, but I honestly love life. I am a happy, bubbly person. I feel very grateful for the things I’ve experienced and where I am in my journey. I’m lucky to be surrounded by the best people, friends, and family. So, why wouldn’t I want to keep going and doing what I love?
What do you see yourself doing in the future?
I see myself having released a shit ton of music, touring, traveling to amazing new destinations and just continuing to do what I’m doing on a much larger scale!
