Learning what makeup looks best on us takes years of trial and error – that palette from Marshall’s an aunt or family friend gifted you during the holidays during your preteen years has most likely served as a somewhat premature (and probably awkward) tester for what might have now become your daily makeup routine.
Eyeshadow can completely change your look for better or worse. Why? Well, obviously experience plays a part, but an equally significant part goes into figuring out what looks best for your own eyes. Your own eye shape deserves to be appreciated so that you’ll be able to accentuate all of those bangin’ features an NYgal wants to show off!
Here are a few tips for a couple of specific eye shapes that should help you get your shadow game on point!
Hooded Lids
For starters, invest in a great eyeshadow primer! Urban Decay, MAC and Smashbox offer high-quality ones that will help prevent those layers of mascara from ending up as an unwelcome addition to your eyeshadow. Try to apply your shadow with your eyes open so you can more easily find the natural crease of your eyelid. Apply the eyeshadow slightly above the natural fold so it won’t disappear when your eyes are open. Matte colors will work best to bring out your inner bombshell.
Deep Set
You’ve most likely got a prominent brow bone, a neutral or peachy shade works amazingly on your lids to brighten the natural shadow cast by that brow bone. In lieu of a heavy eyeliner, opt for a dark shadow to line your upper lashes and blend gently. A brightening highlight under the natural arch of your brows will help even more to really show off definition!
Monolid
Very similar to the hooded lidded ladies, you should also invest in eyeshadow primer, as well as an eyelash primer. The lash primer will help maintain curl and help keep mascara from shedding. Play up your eyebrows! They’ll frame your face and make those gorgeous, exotic eyes pop even more. Craving a smokey eye? Some simple contouring with a medium shade above your natural lid and blending a darker color from above the lashline upwards will assure all eyes on YOUR eyes!

Round
You’ve probably heard how big and doe-like your eyes are, right?! Round-eyed ladies don’t need to do too much to accentuate your peepers; in fact, it’s better to keep it simple – your eyes won’t need much to steal the show. Neutral colors will give you the depth you want without looking too done-up. A tactfully swept bit of eyeliner on the top lid to show off those lashes and a flesh-toned pencil lining your bottom lid will bring out the whites of your eyes.
Almond
Almond-eyed? Nice! You beauties are considered to be able to rock the most diverse of all makeup looks. Almond eyes are ideal for extra smokey looks that accentuate the outer corners and blended down to the outer lower lid. Bring some extra definition by sweeping some highlight from near the tear ducts to the inner part of your upper lid and right under the brow bone. #NoFilter.
Close Set
Surprise, surprise! You babes with close-set eyes are also ideal candidates for that classic smokey look. The best bet for you is to keep the innermost parts of your lids – closest to the tear duct – light and bright. Extend a neutral color outward and blend a darker shade on the outermost crease to create a wider look. Avoid heavy or black eyeliner on your bottom lash line as this will cause your eyes to appear smaller. A bomb mascara will top off the glam look that will have your girlfriends asking if you’ve gotten a makeover.
