Jerry Trainor’s Early Life
Jerry Trainor was born in January of 1977. He was born and raised in San Diego, California. His father was a retired fighter pilot and a lawyer. Trainor’s mother was a high school math teacher. He also had one older sister. Jerry Trainor grew up in the community of Scripps Ranch. Jerry Trainor often credits his family with his love and aptitude for comedy.
Jerry’s education makes it clear that he was always interested in comedy and acting. Trainor attended high school at the Univerity of San Diego High School. This school started as a catholic prep school for boys. He later went to the University of California, Santa Barbara. Jerry Trainor studied drama here and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
He also studied at The Groundlings for a time. This is a school for people to learn improvisational comedy and sketch comedy. Before he became an actor, Jerry did work at Sea World in San Diego as a food and drink vendor.
Jerry Trainor’s Early Acting Career
Before his more popular roles, Jerry Trainor still acted a lot. He was in the popular science fiction movie, Donnie Darko. He played a lanky kid asking how to tell what he should be when he grows up. Jerry Trainor was also in the cheerleading movie, Bring It On Again. In this, he played a smug guy. He also had roles on many TV shows including Malcolm in the Middle and Undressed on MTV.
Jerry Trainor as Crazy Steve
In 2004, Jerry Trainor was officially cast in the popular Nickelodeon series, Drake and Josh. He would play a character called “Crazy Steve”. The character’s full name is Steven William Upshaw, though he is always referred to by his nickname. He is an employee at a movie theater where one of the main characters of the show works. Jerry Trainor’s character has very intense anger issues among other problems.
He acted as this reoccurring character from 2004 to 2007. The talent that Jerry ultimately showed from this unpredictable character role would lead to his next and most popular character yet.
Jerry as ICarly’s Spencer Shay
In 2007 Jerry Trainor was cast as Spencer Shay in ICarly. This character is the older brother and legal guardian of the main character. Spencer Shay is a weird and at times insanely dumb character. This role was the perfect playground for Jerry Trainor’s comedic abilities. He was clumsy and eccentric but also extremely loving and kind to his sister. This show was so popular that it had four video games and a reboot. Jerry Trainor appeared as Spencer Shay in both.
Jerry Trainor seemed to have really good relationships with his fellow actors on this show. In interviews, the younger actors, especially Noah Munck, would talk about how great he was to work with on set. They said he was hilarious and fun while still being a professional. Spencer Shay was clearly a character that Jerry Trainor enjoyed playing. This fully explains why he returned for the recent ICarly reboot.
Jerry Trainor’s Music Career and Awards
He won three Kid’s Choice awards for his acting in ICarly. These awards were in Australia and the United Kingdom. He was also nominated for two more Kid’s Choice awards, one Teen’s Choice award, and even a daytime Emmy award.
On top of his acting career, Jerry also really loves music. He plays the bass guitar and loves to sing. In October 2015, Jerry Trainor started a band with three other people. The guitarist had acted with him in Drake and Josh. They called their band Nice Enough People. In June of 2016, they released their first official EP as a group. This EP was titled Hanover Hideaway. They have yet to release any other music together, but this rock group was loved by many nonetheless.
Jerry Trainor has done a lot throughout the years. He went to school for fine arts and comedy, and it shows. His skills from school have been shown off in his very successful acting career. While he is mostly known for acting as his character Spencer Shay, he has also made a name for himself as a musician and comedian.
