It’s September of 2009, the vampire craze has taken the world by storm after the release of Twilight. Suddenly, a new show comes to CW, The Vampire Diaries. Fans immediately fell in love with the angsty love triangle this show is all about. There were the beautiful but eternally cursed Salvatore brothers. Both brothers were in love with the lead of the show, Elena Gilbert. Elena was a classic girl-next-door with a tragic backstory (her parents died in a car crash that she survived).
Recently on TikTok people have been styling themselves like Elena Gilbert. This typically consists of her more casual, day-to-day outfits. Elena was always a more low-key. She did not wear a lot of makeup or incredibly complex outfits. Her everyday outfit would usually include jeans, a white cami underneath a long sleeve shirt, converse, and sometimes a leather jacket. While her usual style is classic and fun to look back on through this trend circulating around TikTok, it’s also fun to remember some of Elena’s best outfits throughout the seasons.
Elena’s Miss Mystic Falls Dress
In season one of The Vampire Diaries Elena Gilbert competes in the Miss Mystic Falls pageant competition in town. She admits that she is competing for the title because her mother would have wanted her to. For this pageant, she wore a stunning blue dress. This dress is simple, which is perfect for Elena, but it is also incredibly elegant. From the front, it looks like it has halter straps, but they cross in the back which adds a nice detail. The dress is a bright and beautiful royal blue which looks amazing on Elena.
Elena Gilbert on Founder’s Day
At the end of season one, the town of Mystic Falls has a celebration for Founder’s Day. Part of this celebration included a parade. There were several floats in this parade that included a Miss Mystic Falls float. All of the people on the float were dressed in civil war era clothing. While it is not a modern outfit, Elena’s dress on this float was dramatic and gorgeous. The shape of the dress was fairly classic for the era it was meant to represent. However, the embroidered flowers, vines, and butterflies that cover it are such a delicate detail making it one of her best outfits.
Elena’s Graduation Dress
In the final episode of season four, Elena Gilbert graduates from her high school. Later in the night after her graduation ceremony, she talks with Damon. She tells him that she loves him in a beautiful and honest moment. Elena is wearing a shorter white dress than is covered in lace. This dress might not be as extravagant as some of the others on this list, but it is just as striking. With her dark hair and tan skin, it just pops.
Elena Gilbert’s Prom Dress
Season four also features Elena going to prom. She wears a dark pink prom dress. This dress was originally going to be worn by Caroline. However, due to her humanity being turned off, Elena stole it to then wear for this formal high school dance. Even though it was stolen, you would think this dress was always meant for Elena. This strapless ballgown is not too over the top, but it still commands attention. It is floor length with a wide skirt and a simple bow on the back.
Elena in Her Bridesmaids Dress
In the last two episodes of season six (Elena’s last episodes for a while as her actor left), Alaric and Jo get married. Elena is a bridesmaid for their ceremony where she wears an incredible dress. This dress is understated but beautiful. It is floor-length, with a gorgeous ruching effect at the waist. There are lace details on the bodice and sleeves. The dress is a dusty purple with a slightly scalloped neckline. While this could have been a simple dress, the lace and ruching add so much detail to it.
Elena’s Purple 60s dress
In season two of the show, Elena attends her school’s “decade dance”. This particular dance’s theme is the 60s. For this look, Elena has her hair in a high ponytail to perfectly showcase her earrings. Her earrings are stained glass peace signs inside of hearts instead of circles. This jewelry matches perfectly with her intricately patterned purple mini dress with a flared skirt. She also has on a white circle belt and white go-go boots, which perfectly goes with the theme of the dance.
The Vampire Diaries was a large part of the cultural fascination with vampires in the early 2010s. The plotline was juicy and the vampires were sultry, it was the perfect combination. Elena Gilbert’s outfits were just the cherry on top. From her casual everyday look to all of her more extravagant outfits, she’s ripe with fashion inspiration. It’s no wonder that TikTok is currently fascinated with her.
