Read along, and pick the ones that you think will add a sparkle of romance to your sweet date.
There’s something about Mary
This movie is definitely the go-to rom-com. You’ll know that it veers more towards gross-out humor than anything else. While there is a love story running through it, you won’t find anything sappy or saccharine here. Ben Stiller plays Ted, the guy who is hell-bent on being with his high school sweetheart, the titular Mary, no matter the cost. They just don’t seem to make movies like this anymore! If a good laugh and a sprinkle of romance are what you are looking for, then this movie is for you.
500 days of summer
What makes “500 Days of Summer” special is the fact that it is not your typical romantic movie. One-sided love stories definitely leave a sting, and the unique perspective brought forth by this movie definitely leaves you thinking. The element of experimentation that has been brilliantly enmeshed within the movie is a refreshing change from the standard “happily-ever-after” rom-com. And hey, it’s not always summer. There’s always spring waiting to shower you with flowers of happiness.
Chasing Amy
Want a good dose of laughter? Kevin Smith is here to tickle your funny nerve. Chasing Amy is a fun treat from the creator of Jay and Silent Bob. It follows the story of a guy who falls for a lesbian. While watching it more than two decades after its release may make you notice some of the more dated or objectionable aspects of the narrative, it’s important to remember that times were quite different in 1997. This movie still stands up as one of the funniest and most compelling films of the decade.
Jerry Maguire
It is the complete package. Just had to say it. Seriously though, Jerry Maguire pretty much has it all. The film gave us not just some iconic lines but a whole burst of sports, drama, romance, and an extremely adorable child actor who stole the show! Tom Cruise plays the titular character, a sports agent who breaks out to start his own agency, bringing a coworker along with him. Its five Academy Award nominations should be enough to tell you that it’s worth another watch, even if you’ve already seen it. I mean, do you even need a reason to look at young Tom Cruise?
When Harry met Sally
It will not be an exaggeration to state that When Harry Met Sally is synonymous with the golden age of rom-com. It addresses the age-old question of whether men and women can ever simply be friends. And answers it with a hilarious series of twists and turns that brings its two leads together.
Both Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are at the peak of their comedic glory, and even almost 30 years after its release, this movie is as charming as ever. You’ll get to see the origin of so many rom-com tropes here, which have been repeated time and again.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jim Carrey may be better known for his over-the-top comedic roles, but this romantic drama is a standout in his career. It was not a hit upon release, but it managed to bag an Oscar for the best original screenplay and ended up becoming a cult classic, thanks to its unique storytelling and concept. Joel and Clementine are lovers who decide to undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories. The story is bittersweet and has much more of a feel to it than your typical romantic affair.
The Princess Bride
One of the surefire ways to pick a good romantic comedy is to opt for one that focuses more on the comedy than the romance. The Princess Bride is an iconic example of this. The film leaves ample space for both romance and laughter. Wesley’s attempts to woo Buttercup will give you guys all the lovey-dovey feelings you want for a movie date.
Love Actually
Even though it’s a Christmas movie, this charming British rom-com can be appreciated year-round. With so many intertwining storylines to choose from, there’s something for everyone. While some of the romances portrayed in the movie are quite dramatic, others are pretty lighthearted, taking you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Well, even the most tough-hearted of humans will heave a sigh when watching that kid run to the airport to tell his crush what he feels.
Crazy, Stupid, Love
Well, the name says it all. It’s crazy, stupid, and it’s love. Want more reasons to watch? Perhaps Ryan Gosling and his timeless charm are good enough reasons to watch this amazing movie that will make you laugh and cry. Steve Carell and Julianne Moore are in their element; should we even begin to describe the gorgeous Emma Stone? Well, go watch it and have a great time. Because Crazy, Stupid, Love never disappoints.
Titanic
Can we even make a romantic movie list without Titanic? The timeless classic that left all of us broken-hearted The story of love that took shape onboard the Titanic is one that left an indelible mark, and no matter how many times you watch it, the story of Jack and Rose is still going to leave you teary-eyed. Perhaps it’s time for a rewatch. And do not forget a box of tissues.
