While we love living in the big city, it can get a bit rough. Crimes against women are increasing in NYC, with the highest being sexual assault. The #MeToo Movement has shed a light on these recurring instances, but there are still many unreported crimes.

It’s time we NYGals learn to defend ourselves. There are so many self-defense classes around the city, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. As your source for upcoming events in the city, we’ve provided a list of some of the best classes to help you learn to protect yourself.

Krav Maga Institute

Krav Maga combines different fighting techniques to offer protection. This institute preaches women empowerment and teaches women to not only defend themselves but to also avoid possibly dangerous situations. Krav Maga teaches basic instincts and strong body language, all in a supportive environment. You will join other ladies as you embark on your journey towards women’s empowerment.

Krav Maga Institute offers many convenient locations throughout the city. So you don’t have to worry about that one hour train ride to get to your class. Try out the institute for a small fee or sign up for a monthly membership today!

Female Awareness Self Defense

Do you want a private one-on-one class or one with just your closest friends? You can get exactly this at Female Awareness. If you’re shy or just don’t feel like being surrounded by strangers, this is the perfect option for you. Private classes are two hours long and they’re packed with important techniques and safety tips. You can take this class in their Chelsea studio or the instructor can come to your home.

For those that are just starting out in self-defense, Female Awareness offers a two-hour open enrollment course twice a month. Sign up by yourself or with a friend. You gotta start somewhere, why not with Female Awareness?

Find Your Fearlessness

Looking for a free event to see what self-defense is all about? Attend the Find Your Fearlessness event on October 9. From 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, you will learn to walk with confidence and how to use your voice. This event is all about overcoming your fears and standing strong in the face of danger.

The Broad Exchange sponsors this event. They’re all about gender equality and turning talk into action. Not only will you be learning self-defense from them, but you will also be involved in creating a positive impact in the community.

Women’s Fight At Class One MMA

Who says all the fun happens in Manhattan? This self-defense class goes down in Brooklyn. The best thing about this organization is that all of their funds go to support the Rape, Abuse, Incest National Network. This network supports survivors and strives to stop sex crimes everywhere.

These classes are offered on a rolling basis, so you can register whenever you’re ready. Support this cause and sign up!

Women’s Empowerment Self Defense Academy

The Bronx gets a bad rep in the city. It is considered the most dangerous of the burroughs. Most people forget about everything The Bronx has to offer such as the beautiful New York Botanical Garden and the Yankee Stadium. Oh yeah, and the Women’s Empowerment Self Defense Academy.

The academy offers various workshops for teens and adults. Many of the workshops are free, so you don’t have to break the bank to learn how to defend yourself. They teach prevention and intervention techniques. You’re never too young or too old to learn self-defense.
