It’s true that you can never have too many sneakers. So a few years ago when Nike announced that they were working on a collaboration with basketball star Kyrie Irving, many fans of both Nike and Kyrie were understandably excited. There have been multiple drops in this collaboration, but the fifth drop. the Kyrie 5 sneakers, released back in November 2018 still stand out for their style and revolutionary innovations.
Kyrie Irving worked with Nike shoe designer, Ben Nethongkome, to create the innovative Kyrie 5 sneakers. The sneakers were designed with specific details in mind in order to complement Kyrie’s athletic skill set and allow you to somewhat mimic the skills and genetics that Kyrie Irving possesses (because not all of us can get to that level of talent without a helping hand!).
Are the Kyrie 5 Sneakers Worth the Hype?
The 28-year-old, 6”2 basketball player’s deal with Nike was worth $11 million as of 2019. Impressively, the line was the second best selling of 2017, behind LeBron James’ collection.
With that in mind and the thousands of positive reviews online, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. At New York Gal, we decided to wear the sneakers for a week to see if they lived up to expectations. Read on for what we learned.
The Kyrie 5 Sneakers Draw the Eye
Due to the eccentric designs and bright colors, the Kyrie 5 sneakers tend to draw the eye of everyone from your friends to strangers. Wherever I walked I received stares and compliments on my sneakers. Styling your sneakers are easy because they make a big statement on their own.
So if you are someone who likes to blend in with a crowd, the Kyrie 5 sneakers may not be the perfect sneakers for you. But if you enjoy making fashion risks and want to embrace fun styles, the sneakers could be exactly what you are looking for.
Whereas I wore a bright but rather plain design, I can only imagine the stares you would get if you wore a pair of Kyrie sneakers from the Spongebob Squarepants collection. Nike brought out Spongebob and Patrick Star-themed sneakers for those obsessed with the childhood classic.
For those of you with an attachment to the iconic cartoon, what better way to proudly display your love for Spongebob and Patrick than to wear pineapple house-inspired sneakers? Life would be boring if everyone wore the same!
They are Extremely Comfortable
The two most important things when it comes to sneakers are comfort and style, and luckily the Kyrie 5 sneakers have both dialed in. The Kyrie 5 sneakers have new Nike Air Zoom Turbo cushioning inside, which Nike describes as delivering “an explosive return of energy.” Due to this cushioning the sneakers felt comfortable from day one of wearing them, and I really did feel like I had more energy while I was wearing them.
They’re Great for an Active Lifestyle
The Kyrie 5 sneakers are basketball sneakers. As I do not play basketball, I cannot comment on their performance as a basketball shoe. However, I went on many walks and hikes wearing them and appreciated how well supported my feet felt. As the sneakers are part designed and tested by basketball legend Kyrie Irving, and backed by athletic giant Nike, you can be sure that the Kyrie 5 sneakers will make an excellent basketball shoe.
There are five outstanding features of the sneaker, which include the new, revolutionary Air Zoom Turbo, the flytrap closure, and rounded outsole traction. These features are perfect for an active lifestyle of playing sports and keeping fit.
The Verdict
In terms of interesting and unique designs, comfort, and innovation, the Kyrie 5 sneakers certainly live up to expectations. Whether you want to be the next Kyrie Irving, or you’re just wanting to make a statement with your sneakers and like the colorful designs, the Kyrie 5 sneakers might just need to be your next sneaker purchase.
