A fashion trend that seems to be becoming very popular among Millennials nowadays is purple hair. This is something that first gained prominence in highly liberal areas like Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area, but has since made its way across almost every state.

One of the most popular hair colors chosen by these Millennials is purple. Purple is a great choice for people that want to try something new. It is not just a way to show off a unique new look, but it can also even lay down the foundations of completely redefining your image as a whole. So what are the main reasons millennials dye their hair purple? Here are nine of the top reasons:

For Fashion

Perhaps the least complicated reason why Millennials dye their hair purple is simply for fashion. This is usually for those of them who want to dabble into the Avante Garde at the influence of the models they see in all of the most popular magazines. They see how bold these models look with their lilac locks and they want to try it for themselves.

To Stand Out

Another reason why Millennials want to dye their hair purple is just to stand out. People who make this choice for this reason are often unimpressed by traditional looks and would rather do something with their appearance that makes them more unique.

To Defy Convention

Even when it is not specifically to look good, a lot of people want to dye their hair purple just to break convention in general. People who make this choice want to make one thing clear, they do not want to stay within the bounds of the traditional and they want to break convention at every opportunity, even when it comes to their hair.

Setting a New Norm

Right along the lines of breaking convention, you are also able to set a new norm when you choose a hair color that is less traditional. People who make this choice often ask “why not?” when it comes to their fashion statements, why should beauty be defined by what the industry considers normal? Normal, as they would have it, is based on personal preference.

Redefining Standards

When you have purple hair, you also set a new standard for beauty. If you look at all of the top fashion magazines you will see models that have blonde or brunette hair, but why does it have to be limited to these hair colors? At its core, fashion is about wearing your personality and your character on your sleeve, so being limited by traditional standards is not the way to go if you are going to truly express yourself.

Sending a Message

As one would expect, having purple hair is also a good way to send a message. Just like every other color, there are always hidden meanings. For purple in particular, it could be a way of signifying nobility, royalty, and luxury. That means millennials donning purple hair could be a way for them to excuse fanciness! Purple can also mean calm, dignity, and wisdom among other things.

To Be Fun

Of course, having purple colored hair does not always have to be so complex. Some do not have any sort of hidden meaning behind their purple hair at all, it is just a way for them to show that they do not want to take everything so seriously. Purple, being bright and profound, is a very fun color to don! Purple, being bright and profound, is a very fun color to don! If you want to be more playful, try different shades of purple. You only have to get toner out from your hair (see here to learn how) and then try a new style.

Political Reasons

Of course, some reasons for having purple hair are a little more serious than others. One of the more serious reasons for having purple hair is to show that you are a liberal. This is something that has gained traction in the San Francisco bay area as a way to demonstrate liberal values and other liberals from all across the USA and even other parts of the world have followed the trend.

To Show Affiliation

Finally, having purple hair is a way to show affiliation. Plenty of people who have purple hair (or similar brightly colored hair) identify as being part of the LGBTQ community. As you likely already know, one of the most profound symbols of the LGBTQ community is the rainbow and their community members want to show off their affiliation by having their hair colored with one of the colors of the rainbow.

Of course, purple isn’t technically part of the rainbow, but it is very close to violet. Purple hair just looks less overwhelming than violet  so some of them make the compromise.

Of course, many people are not very receptive to purple hair color because they do not want to stray from the norm. If this is something that you want to try, always remember that whatever you do with your hair (or other parts of your body) is completely your choice and the opinions of others do not have the power to belittle your choices.
