Your living room may be beautifully decorated, but looking at the same thing for years on end can make anything seem a little boring. If you’re feeling this way about your living area, then it’s time to shake it up!

But what if it ends up looking worse? We understand how a lot of people might be afraid of introducing a new design element to the area. If you feel that way, a room planner can help you see the final output even before you buy anything for the redesign.

Don’t have any idea where to start? Don’t worry! We’ve compiled tried and tested tips that will give the entire living area a breath of fresh air.

1. Paint the Walls a Light Color

If you don’t want the living area to be the centre of attention, choose a light colour for the walls. If you have a choice between making your walls light blue or dark brown, which would you prefer? According to color psychology, blue is a good colour to paint your home because it creates a feeling of calmness and relaxation. And who doesn’t want a little less stress and anxiety in their home life?

Here’s another reason light colours are amazing: introducing unique decor pieces will be much easier. You can have these pieces stand out with no problem. And if that’s not enough reason to go with light colours, think of how much roomier the area will feel! Dark colours create the illusion that a room is smaller than it is. Meanwhile, light colours do the opposite.

So, if you think that going with light colours is boring, think again! Not only do they “create” more space, but they also open up more opportunities for you to unleash your creativity.

2. Make the Sofa the Focal Point of the Room

One of the reasons why it’s a good idea to keep the sofa the focal point of the living room is because it makes a statement about the type of lifestyle you lead. We tend to spend a lot of time sitting.

Our sofa is the place where we like to relax, so by making the sofa the focal point, you’re telling the world you want your guests to feel welcome. When designing your home, focus on creating a welcoming environment.

Make sure you have plenty of seating and places for people to rest their legs, plus areas for socialising. If you have kids, also consider installing a play area near the sofa. It’s a good idea to have a big TV for everyone to enjoy.

3. Use a Floral Pattern on Pillows, Curtains, and Rugs

There’s nothing wrong with adding a bit of colour to your home, and floral patterns make for a nice change from your traditional decor. They’re popular because they go with a range of styles, and they can be found in almost any fabric or material you can imagine.

Just be careful to pick a pattern that will really stand out and won’t be too distracting if you’re trying to keep the room uncluttered. But if you’re trying to go bold, go wild! With the right planning, even the loudest floral patterns can be beautiful.

4. Create an Eclectic Mix of Furniture Styles

It’s your home, so you should feel free to take a bit of artistic licence here. Who cares if it doesn’t look like something out of a magazine? Think of different furniture pieces that reflect your personality and style.

But still, keep in mind the overall theme of the room. Think about what will be functional and practical and at the same time stylish and attractive.

If you have a lot of space and can afford to fill it with an eclectic assortment of furniture, you might choose a rustic look that includes a mix of antique pieces, mid-century modern, industrial, and more. On the other hand, if you want a more streamlined look, then you might opt for pieces that blend more seamlessly.

5. Add a Small Coffee Table

Did you know there are psychological reasons people love coffee table books? They make for good conversation starters and inspire nostalgia. And to help fulfil the purpose of such books, you’ll need a coffee table.

As guests will be spending a lot of time in your living room, you’ll want to make it very inviting. This small addition will help your guests feel even more welcome in your lovely abode.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment!

No matter how you decide to approach decorating your living room, just remember that you don’t have to follow any rule but your own. As long as you’re happy with what it looks like, that’s all that matters!

Whether you’re going for a major renovation or just a few small changes, we hope our tips help you as you begin this new project. Good luck!
