A “dropped pin” is a simple way to mark a location on a map. When you drop a pin, it becomes a permanent feature of the map. This allows you to easily return to the same spot later.
You can use a dropped pin to navigate to a specific place or find out where you’re located. For example, you could drop a pin at home to remember where you parked your car. Or you might drop one at work to remind yourself of the route to your next meeting.

Dropped pin is easy. Choose a name for your pin, enter a description if you want, and select a category. Then drop the pin wherever you’d like.
If you don’t see the option to add a location, make sure you’ve enabled location services on your device. If you do have access to location data, you’ll receive a prompt asking whether you’d like to turn off location services temporarily. Tap OK to continue adding a location.
Once you’ve added a location, you can view it on a map by tapping the pin again. To delete a pinned location, long-press the pin and choose to Remove Location.
Dropped pin in Google Maps – How to add a location and remove a map marker
Google Maps now allows you to drop a pin anywhere on the map. This feature makes it easier to find places without having to type in exact addresses or numbers. You can pin a location by clicking the map, typing in coordinates, or dragging the pin directly onto the map.
To remove a pin, just move it out of the range of the marker icon. If you want to see what else is nearby, tap the info button next to the pin.
To drop a pin on Google maps on Windows, macOS, or Chrome OS, follow these steps.
Step 1: Start with the address
To pin a location, type the address into the Google Maps search box and press Enter. A map will open up showing the location.
When you hover over a location on the map, a small blue dot will appear. This is called a “pin.” Clicking the pin will drop a marker at the location on the map.
You can pin any place on the map. Even cities.
Google provides several ways to add pins to maps. On desktop computers, you can do this either from within the browser or via the Google Map Maker tool. For mobile devices, you can use the built-in tools, including the Android app and iOS app. In addition, there are third-party apps like GeocodeMe that let you easily add locations to maps.
Step 2: Find a more specific location
You’ve found something online — maybe it’s a restaurant review, product listing, or even a job offer. You’re excited about it, but you know there are probably some things missing. So you start searching again, hoping to find those missing pieces. But you just end up getting lost in a sea of irrelevant results. What gives? Let’s take a look at why entering a more specific location helps you find exactly what you’re looking for.
The first step is to make sure you’re asking the right questions. If you’re trying to find a place to eat, you might ask “Where do I go for good Mexican food?” This question is too broad, because it doesn’t tell Google where you want to go. Instead, try narrowing down your search by adding keywords like “Mexican food,” “dinner,” or “nearby.”
Once you’ve got a better idea of what you’re looking for, enter the name of the city or town into the address bar. For example, if you’re looking for a local Thai restaurant, type “Thai food near me” into Google.
If you still can’t find what you’re looking for after entering a location, zoom in. You’ll notice that the map gets smaller as you zoom in, but you’ll also see fewer listings. In fact, you won’t see anything unless you zoom in close enough. Once you reach the maximum zoom level, you’ll see the same amount of listings as you did before you zoomed in.
There’s no hard rule for how many listings you should see once you’ve reached the maximum zoom level. Some people say 10, others say 20. Whatever number you choose, stick to it. Don’t change it halfway through your search.
Finally, remember that there’s a limit on how much information you can show in an image. If you’re showing a lot of detail, you could run into trouble. Try keeping your images simple.
How to drop a pin on your phone
You can now drop pins on the map without having to type out an address. Just open up the Maps app, tap the three dots menu button, and choose “Save.” This saves your current location as a place you want to keep track of later. From here, you can add text to describe the place, like a restaurant or coffee shop. You can also add a label to help others find the spot easily.
Once you’ve added some information about the place, you’ll see a blue dot representing where you are. Tap the blue dot to view your saved places. If you’re looking for something specific, you can use the search bar at the bottom to look for nearby businesses.
If you’d rather just save a bunch of addresses and don’t care what you call them, you can do that too. Open the Maps app, tap “More,” and select “Addresses.” Now you can pick multiple addresses and save them as one place. To make sure everything goes smoothly, you might want to take note of the address format you’re saving the data in. For example, if you’re adding a few different addresses, you might want to include the city name and state abbreviation, along with the street number.
You can also drop pins on maps that aren’t associated with addresses yet. When you go into the Maps app, tap on the “+ Add Location” option. Then, just start typing away. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see a list of suggestions based on what you typed. Select the one you want, and you can continue to edit it.
Finally, you can share your saved places over social media. Open up the Maps app, and tap the three dots menu icon. Choose “Share.” From here, you can share the places you’ve saved directly to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and WeChat.
Drop a pin on your iPhone or Android phone
Google Maps now allows you to drop pins directly onto maps without having to open up the app. This feature is similar to how Apple Maps works, where you can tap and hold on a map area to drop a pin. Once you do, it becomes a permanent marker on the map. You can drag the pin around and move it anywhere on the map. If you want to delete the pin, just tap and hold it once more.
You can also use the “Save and Label” option within the app to make sure you don’t lose track of your pins. Just tap the menu icon in the upper left corner and select “Pin.” From there, you’ll see options like “Label,” “Delete,” and “Edit.” Tap one of those buttons to save your pinned locations.
If you’d rather take advantage of this feature while out and about, you can download the Google Maps app for iOS or Android devices. Both apps are free to download.
How to Forward a Dropped Pin
To pin something on Pinterest, simply add it to one of your boards. You can do this manually by tapping the + button at the bottom left corner of the board and selecting Add to Board. Or, you can use the app to automatically forward pins to a specific board. If you want to share a particular pin with someone else, just go to their profile and select the dropdown menu next to “Followers.” From there, you can choose to follow that person’s boards or even send them a personalized email.
If you don’t want to send a personal email, you can always forward the pin to yourself via the web browser. Head over to the original post and copy the URL. Then, head back to your account settings and tap on the gear icon. Tap Save Changes and you’re good to go!
How to Drop Multiple Pins
Google Maps now allows you to drop pins from within the app itself. This feature makes it easier to quickly mark up a map with points of interest. To do so, tap the plus icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. From there, you can choose whether you want to use one or multiple pins. If you select multiple pins, you’ll see a list of each pin you’ve added. Tap the pin you’d like to delete and drag it out of the viewport. Once you release the pin, it will disappear.
You can also add multiple pins to a map. Simply tap the plus icon again, and select “multiple pins.” Then, you can either drag and drop pins into the map or enter coordinates manually.
To make sure you don’t miss anything important, Google Assistant’s new “stop” command will let you ask Google to turn off its virtual assistant. Just say “Hey Google, stop talking,” followed by the name of the person you’re trying to avoid.
For example, if you wanted to stop listening to your roommate talk about his latest project, just say “Hey Google, please stop talking to my roommate.”
Label a Pin
To add a label to a pinned location, you must first open up the Maps app and find the place you want to label. Once there, tap the pin icon in the bottom left corner. You’ll see a list of labels already added to the map. Tap one of those pins to select it. A box will pop up where you can type a description. Type away and press Enter to save your changes. Your new label will now show up next to the original pin on every device you use.
How to Save and Label a Dropped Pin on Google Maps
Google Maps allows you to drop pins anywhere on the map. But how do you keep track of where you’ve been? With labels, you don’t have to worry about losing your place again. Just select the label option under the ‘add’ tab. Then choose any name you like. Now you’ll always be able to find your way back to places you’ve visited.
