New year, new you? Maybe not, but this could be the year that you decide to strive to be better…to be your best self. Being your best self is about being comfortable in your own skin and immersing yourself in the most positive environment to enable you to be and experience your best.

So how do you accomplish that? Here are 4 simple ways to do it.

Avoid the naysayers

You likely have a few negative people in your life, but in the past it’s possible that you’ve avoided the issue of dealing with their negativity. This year, say no to all the naysayers and negative people whose only purpose it seems is to continually bring you down.

Constantly internalizing negative ideas, whether they’re specifically about you, someone around you or just life in general, doesn’t allow you to focus on and properly appreciate all the good you have in your life. And once you realize how great you can feel without the negativity, you’ll never want to go back.

Some easy tips to do this?

  • Focus on solutions rather than the problems.
  • Seek out time with your most positive friends.
  • Make new connections to other positive people.

You’ll find that, when uplifting spirits surround you, you’ll begin to gravitate toward a more positive focus and perspective in your life. And that will help to encourage you to be your best self.

Stay in your lane

Do you ever find yourself on Facebook wistfully looking at someone else’s life? Comparison robs you of joy and it in no way allows you to be your best self.

Stay in your lane and don’t compare yourself to others. It’s like comparing apples to oranges and it doesn’t do justice to anyone’s situation. Everyone has their own individual paths, and must deal with their own set of issues and obstacles, many of which no one else can see.

You have hard-won successes that are just as valid as those of your acquaintances and friends. And all have their own timeline. Life isn’t a race – it’s about the journey and enjoying (and getting the most from) the experience that comes with it.

Commit to your goals

Being your best self begins with a genuine commitment to those things that you value and are most important to you. Anyone can set goals, but not everyone will achieve them. That takes real purpose, and a determination to bring those goals to fruition.

What are the best ways to do this? Set specific and realistic goals. Reach for the stars, but start with those baby steps. No one walked on the moon overnight. And then map your plan to accomplish what you’ve set out to do…one day at a time.

Find your tribe

If you truly desire to be your best, it is immensely important to surround yourself with the right people. It’s not only people who are positive and will cheer you on to reach your goals, but it’s about the people who will stick around too, when things aren’t going so smoothly.

Maybe you’re a new mom and need a little extra support from other women who have been through what you’re experiencing. Or maybe you’ll find your homies among an all-ladies book club at the library. The possibilities are endless, but you have to actively seek people out.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and be your best self this year by counting to 4! Avoid negativity and comparison, set and commit to achievable goals,  follow-through, and find support. You’ll be amazed at how natural being your best self becomes when you have the right tools!
